In 2013, mathematician and science author Ian Stewart published a book on 17 Equations That Changed The World. We recently came across this convenient table on Dr. Paul Coxon’s twitter account by mathematics tutor and blogger Larry Phillips that summarizes the equations.

“The square root of minus 1” – but, but, but they’re not showing that.

There was something I saw many years ago where the proof required that:

There was a subtle difference and for the life of me I cannot remember what it was. Anyone? btm?

A curious choice of equations in my opinion.

What about:

F = M/a
stress/strain = E
M/EI = 1/R
?

Those three equations changed the World more than the 17 listed combined.

Have you made a typo?

I thought the force equation was:

F=ma

(Force = mass times acceleration.)

Also, Ohm’s Law, V = I*R and its derivatives. Should be way up there.

Hey Zeuss!

No wonder buildings crack up and fall down.

They got number 3 wrong. The second equals sign shouldn’t be there.

But I like the collection very much. It gives me quite a thrill to see the Navier-Stokes equation up there. I made a living solving that.

Sorry, I used the slightly unconventional acceleration-inverse form of the equation, where a = time^2/distance.

Well we can all agree with that one, can’t we?

speaking of equations that changed the world here’s a recent one

2C8H18 + 25O2 => 16CO2 + 18H2O

Google says: combustion of gasoline in engines.

Yes that would have been influential.

surely MC <= MR deserves a mention, as in “i would write more about the matter but this marginal is too small to justify it”

also it might be wise to include

dy/dt = kxy – ly

in case this goes viral — you saw it here first

By the way, I take it you know that six or more of those equations are actually wrong.

eg, Newton’s law of gravity has been superseded by Einstein’s.

But the form they’ve shown is actually (close enough to) the original form that changed the world.

I didnt know, thanks for the update.

Maybe let the publisher know for second edition update.

Nah, I prefer them in their simplified form, shown, rather than the correct improved versions.
