Subject: Ancient reptile was like a prehistoric platypus

>>Although the modern-day platypus may seem like a real oddball of an animal, it turns out that a prehistoric reptile had some of the same key features. Like the platypus (which is a mammal, albeit one that lays eggs), Eretmorhipis carrolldongi had small eyes, four flippers, and a flexible duck-like bill.<<

Hadrosaurs are known as duck-billed dinosaurs.

But they looked and behaved nothing like Platypus, plus their bills were made of different substances.

The word is spelt ‘cloacal’.

But that’s beside the point. Eretmorhipis carrolldongi had small eyes, four flippers, and a flexible duck-like bill. That makes it much more platypus-like than a hadrosaur.

I’m sure I’ve seen some platypus-like non-mammal before On “walking with dinosaurs” perhaps? Or on “the future is Wild”?

Not this one.

“Prehistoric platypus-like fish reconstructed by Australian scientists. Brindabellaspis had nostrils in its eye sockets and a long bill with jaws. It is named Brindabellaspis after the Brindabella range, near Canberra, and belongs to an extinct group of armoured prehistoric fish known as placoderms.”

Found June 2018.
