I can see how “The team worked from hundreds of original Hubble observations and processed the combined views to recover a large quantity of light emitted by stars from the outer zones of the largest galaxies.” And thus gave far better estimates of the sizes of the relatively nearby galaxies in the image.

You’ve figured the colour scheme out I assume. The white and grey are random noise from the background … I wonder …

I had a go at trying to clean it up. Not a success.
