Lasers can beam audible messages directly to people’s ears

Researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, a United States Department of Defense research facility, developed laser systems that can “transmit various tones, music and recorded speech at a conversational volume” to specific people without the recipient wearing any special equipment. Basically, the operator points a laser at someone from a distance and that individual hears the transmitted audio even though others in the area don’t. Conspiracy theorists, start your engines. One old spy device was to aim a laser at a window pane to record all the voices and noises inside.

The Russians went one better and made a spy device with no electronics, just a resonant cavity that would vibrate to the sounds around it. To be read off by laser.

> One unique aspect of this laser sweeping technique is that the signal can only be heard at a certain distance from the transmitter.

That could be done with a pair of lasers made to intersect and focus at the required location.

Very similar lo laser Doppler anemometry. The pair of lasers generate moving interference fringes.

And they presented it as a gift to the American embassy in Moscow. Sheer brilliance :)

American Scottish fiddlers. They’re pretty good.

But they can’t beam it directly to your ears.
