Bugger
We’ll be lucky to scrape up 600.
There’s been a meme running through the commentariat about having to save test cricket, the rules need to be changed they say, we need it cut to four days they say, we need to play day/night test they say. From Ian Chappell to the ABC commentary team they are all proposing their views on how test cricket can be saved from it’s imminent demise, it’s been going on for decades.
But obviously none of them have bothered to look at the stats.
I never bought the argument and this article highlights the false premise those agitating for change have been using.
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/aug/07/edgbaston-crowd-test-match-attendances-england-Australia
“Odd thing is, it’s not true, or even close to it. Test match crowds are bigger now than they have been at any point since the 1950s, when the authorities would push in the boundary ropes to allow people to sit on the grass verges. In Simon Wilde’s excellent new biography of the England cricket team, there is a table of Test match attendances in England over the past 40 years. It shows the average gate at an England Test was 52,851 in the 1980s, 63,853 in the 1990s, 72,568 in the 2000s, and 77,418 in the 2010s. So, in that time, the average gate at an English Test match has risen by 46%.”

more on the light towers, they are only 47m high because there is a height restriction on buildings in the parliament precinct in Canberra. Presumably so they don’t compete with the big flag on parliament house.
By contrast other lights around the country are about 70-75m to a bottom of the head frame. The lights themselves being up to 85m high.
Leads me to question if a height around 50m is adequate. If it is not then why bother installing lights at Canberra. If they are adequate then why waste the extra money building towers a good 20m too tall?
