I was reading about Live-Aid, the 1985 benefit concert. There were two concerts held simultaneously, one in Wembley Stadium in the UK and one is Philadelphia.

It was originally planned to have David Bowie and Mick Jagger sing a duet while Bowie was in London and Jagger in Philadelphia. The time lag was the main reason this venture wouldn’t work.

Fast forward some 30 years and technology is much faster and more reliable. Could such a duet be held now without major problems?

The speed of light hasn’t changed that much.

No. Lag is still a problem. It is noticeable enough in long distance telephone calls to be just that little bit offputting. I can’t imagine a modern system will have defeated that little bit of lag to make something like singing a duet in time possible.

So it’s true then?

Western civilisation really is in a state of rapid and irreversible decline?

I think the main problem would be delay in transmission. Even a few microseconds would throw most music out of synch. There’s musical styles where the delay would be less obvious, I guess…

I’m gunna say yes, if the audio/video of the live performance could be digitally delayed to synch exactly at either end.

“Eligible Primary Producers can claim a rebate of 25% of the cost of purchase, delivery and if applicable, the labour cost to engage a person to install water infrastructure for animal welfare needs.
The On-Farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate scheme can be applied to costs incurred from 1st July 2018 for new purchases, and installation of pipes, water storages and water pumps, de-silting dams, and associated power supplies such as generators.”

Oooh, time to get some irrigation infrastructure done, I need/want to run about a kilometre of one and a half inch poly pipe.
And Stumpy was the go to man for this stuff, shakes fist at Stumpy

Would it still count as a “live performance” if the signals were delayed by one or two seconds so they could be digitally mixed and synced?
