not sure what climate thread to put this in. Which one is for ‘we’re completely stuffed?’

Peering beyond scientific reticence….

The Uninhabitable Earth

Famine, economic collapse, a sun that cooks us: What climate change could wreak — sooner than you think.

*This article appears in the July 10, 2017, issue of New York Magazine.

*This article has been updated to provide context for the recent news reports about revisions to a satellite data set, to more accurately reflect the rate of warming during the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, to clarify a reference to Peter Brannen’s The Ends of the World, and to make clear that James Hansen still supports a carbon-tax based approach to emissions.

It has some very good points and should be read by all, it might then bring the urgency of this matter into public view.

Yes, yes, no.

Also nuclear war.

I’m not convinced that the human race will exist in significant numbers in fifty years.

My brother tried to convince me that he was confident that we’d smooth the way to the end.

True, though we will have brought it upon ourselves. The other critters on Earth may well have also done that to themselves, but they lack the intelligence to see that they did.
Unfortunately, the same may apply to us.

In fact it does apply to a lot of us.

Define “significant”.

Before Obama’s reduction of Strategic Nuclear weapons I would have agreed with you.

Now I’m much more hopeful. The biggest short term threat I see now is economic collapse followed by 500 years of war. Human population down to about 5 to 10% of the present population. Is that still “significant”?

I can’t help wondering what would and wouldn’t survive a global economic collapse followed by war.
