Good idea Dinetta.
Well as you would all know I had the gastric lap band procedure to help me lose weight.
Mind, it only helps to alleviate hunger and portion control…and it’s a heck of a lot easier to lose weight when you’re not tortured by hunger.
Theres only one way to lose weight , reduce fat intake, and my diet is a low GI one (mostly lol)
I was a gym junkie ,mainly weights, but my shoulder prob has put a stop to that for now. I can’t wait to get back into it.
Gardenings great for excercise, physically and mentally , from the sweaty digging and creating beds and borders, to the gentle planting out and watering.
I get aerobic excercise walking the dog, well rather trying to hold him back!
I have no regime or timetable, and my day can get competely thrown out by other factors, so it’s whenever wherever I can excercise, I do.

Yay! Great start, Happy Potter!
climbs on soapbox
I’ve been on the W****y Weight Management programme for nearly 12 months now: only 5 more appointments to go.
I could have gone on the 9 month programme but gave myself 12 months and it worked out better, although I’m bored now…
It was full meal supplements at first, with a “must” of unlimited vegetables (only corn, potato and sweet potato restricted) for the evening meal…plus 1 dessertspoon of oyl (for the gall bladder) and a pinch of salt (for internal equilibrium) … the supplements are available by prescription only…can’t be purchased over the counter…
These can only be taken for so long, then each is replaced by a food group, as time goes by. Weekly visits to the dietitian with weigh-ins and blood pressure reading, so many blood tests at first! The dietitians work with you about what triggers your eating, plus you look at your lifestyle and also as each food group is re-introduced, you get to understand how your body uses it…
In the end, one becomes one of those folk in the supermarket, who find the backs of food packages rivetting…
Mr D sniffily informed me, the first night, that he and the boys “would take care of themselves, thanks”, but after two nights of my happily stuffing myself on stir-fry veges (sauces are “allowed” as part of the calorie count) I was then told “he didn’t see why I couldn’t cook their meat and extra vegetables for them as well”…He has since downsized his meat portions, as has our older boy.
Part of the programme cost includes a psychologist, which I never saw (they refunded my money) because he consulted the programme participants only on a Friday, and I could not get to Rocky on a Friday…and also there is a sports physiologist…he is part of the team that got Anna Meares back on her bike after that bad prang…he prescribed some resistance exercises and than another time he worked out my fat-burn heart rate range…
I lost my way a bit with the exercise, so I asked for a private consult with the sports physiologist, but they swapped with a dietitian’s appointment so’s to keep my costs down…best thing I ever did…he understood where I was going and set me straight, plus prescribed some routines that I then took to the PCYC whose qualified instructoress (?) took me through them…
The tools I bought were: an around the neck pedometer, hugely accurate to within 2 steps; and a Heart Rate Monitor (HRM). I already had one but it was all over the place so I purchased a more up-to-date one.. These have been invaluable, but each to his own, my daughter (who also undertook the programme) does not think the pedometer is useful for her.
At the moment I am on “maintenance”, still consulting with the dietitian every week, and am contemplating “rewarding” myself with a co-ordinated gym outfit, to motivate myself to get out and back to the gym.
Before undertaking the programme, I was pre-hypertension and pre-diabetic. The blood tests show that the fat content of my blood has plummeted, the cholesterol (did you know that exercise stimulates the liver to make “good” cholesterol?) has dipped to within a safe range, the blood pressure has been great for ages now. I wasn’t a candidate for the surgical intervention but my lifestyle (I realize now) precluded success on Weight Watchers (which I love). Purchase of about 4 Weight Watchers cook books was a brilliant idea of mine.
Without a doubt, the weekly visits to the dietitian plus the tracking, kept me going. My family was hugely supportive and watched what I ate more carefully than I did! The big plus is when people say “but you look so well! “ and this was the idea…weight loss that would not give me more health problems than I already had, and monitoring so that if I did develop a health problem, it could be managed right away.
MrD was so impressed with my extra visit to the sports physiologist, he went himself and is now riding his bike and walking (once a day each activity – so that’s two exercise sessions in the day) to such an extent that he has now bought himself a new belt! (ran out of holes on the last one).
It was expensive (well I thought it was) but the spin-off from my doing it was the rest of the family benefited from my new nutrition knowledge and new cooking styles. It’s literally “for life”…I’ll have all this knowledge for the rest of my life…besides the programme giving me a new lease on life!
The point of this ramble is: if you are thinking of getting your weight where you want it, go for it! Go to Weight Watchers (or join online) or see a dietitian or something. Go for whatever suits you. But go and DO it! and as you feel the benefits when the months go by, reward yourself…

Comiserations to us both..
I blew my diet clean out of the water.
I went to a friends to borrow some tools and anytime someone visits them a tablecloth gets flung on the table and heaps of food materialises , fresh bread rolls, cheeses of all sorts and lusious custard teacake just appear. And they are the sort who are offended if you don’t eat.
Told them I’m going to report them to the food police, and my band surgeon lol.

How could you resist, indeed? What wonderful friends, to regard their friend’s visits as “occasions”!
I had a N***a’s apple and raspberry tartlet (individual pie) for dessert, with Bo******en’s full cream yoghurt (actually the calories aren’t too bad on that) and the fat intake, as I said to MrD, was probably my quota for 3 weeks!
Have really got to focus on the fat-burn episodes (?) events (?) … there is a stair-master at the PCYC that I’d like to learn to use just for fun…get my waist measurement down…

I have learned to use the stair master…it all fell into place after I started using it, thanks to another kind gym user who took me through the principles…only 5 mins tho’…I am going for a walk tonight so I won’t be so sore tomorrow…
Getting back into an exercise routine is paying off…found my pedometer! (but the battery’s flat)…the HRM is going great guns if only I could read the pathetically tiny print in the manual I’d prolly get more out of it…
As a reward, I found I could get my arms through the sleeves of a favourite dress that I haven’t been able to wear for 5 years!! This is an improvement in two months…
Sadly I regained 4 kg over the past 6 weeks but I think I have just about knocked one of them off this week…have re-joined Weight Watchers online and this has helped with “tracking”…they have a recipe builder now and this helps you work out the “points” of your recipes…
Goal is 68 kg…enough to stay rounded but enough to exercise without damage to joints, ligaments etc…

I went to WW many years back ( you had to be 10 pounds overweight to join and I was 15 lbs overweight) but the instructor at the time was one of those who believed ‘ skinny is beautiful’ , and I went underweight and ended up 58kg. She still wasn’t happy!

Wonder how she got to be a leader? Fads have certainly changed with the times with WW…I think they’ve had to get their act together with all the competition…such as your lap-banding programme…
S’mores are a wheat buscuit (think those Shredded Wheatmeal ones of Arnotts) covered with chocolate on one side, with a toasted marshmallow and a teaspoon of cream…we usually have the mallow and whipped cream in the middle of two biscuits…you could have two mallows on the one biscuit if you want…they are very more-ish (hence the S’mores name) but I can only hack two as the sugar stops me in my tracks and makes me thirsty besides…

It is a traditional Girl Scout treat. Short for “some mores” It consists of marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched between 2 graham crackers (which are a bit like shredded wheatmeal biscuits)
http://www.geocities.com/suarezgfam/SmoresHistory.html
We often make them and have them at our Girl Guide camps, but not quite the way Dinetta has them…we don’t usually have the cream. Although I have used chocolate wheaten biscuits to make them…easier than having the choc separate.
As D says though, they are incredibly rich and you couldn’t have too many of them.

Yes there is something rather special about sitting around a campfire with the Guides and there leaders singing campfire songs and eating s’mores. However many of my guides (and myself for that matter) prefer damper twists. We each take some damper dough and twist it around a stick, making sure that the top is part of the dough is pushed on tightly so no hole develops. Then we cook them in the coals of the campfire (at the end). When cooked we remove them from the stick and drizzle golden syrup into them (which hopefuly if there is no hole stays inside the twist and is absorbed).
A simple treat, but oh so yummy!

If theres a down side to losing lots of weight, it is that I can’t get my favouite undergarments in my size because they are made for larger ladies.
Lowest size is a 14 and I’m a 10-12.
I hate garment shopping.

She found it hard to get a good fitting bra over there, they don’t really need them much (all rugged up) and ditto with jeans…not sure why good fitting jeans were hard to come by, maybe they are a different shape to us?

Gee whiz Happy, don’t put me off! I have finished my Weight Management Programme…put on 5 kg during the maintenance phase but they think, despite my short height, this may be my body’s preferred weight…Fashionasta Daughter is dirty because I’m “allowed” 300 calories more per day than her…this is after that test where you lie down and breathe and they measure something in your breath…getting into a different range of clothing is part of the “reward” for me…
Have you tried Myers? I go to the one in Brisbane and grab a corsetierre, they know their stock and body shapes and all…but I do find this one woefully understocked in full and half-slips…

Yes I looked everywhere, then I contacted the manufacturers and they said to get the size 14 bra then unpick the hook and eye parts and cut off 1.5 cm each side and re sew them with a fine zigzag stitch. That will take it to a size 10-12.
I can do that. I’m glad I rang them.

Well that new toy doesn’t work for me, but my legs are rather tired…MrD was “within range” by the front gate, I never even made it to range during my whole hour this AM. However, my average heartbeat was up, within the low 100’s so that’s a good thing. Think I’ll save the gym until later this afternoon, give my legs time to recuperate LOL!
The vest weights 4.5kg, you can add more weights as you get fitter, that’s nearly 10lb in the old money…

My weight has stalled at 120-121kg. That’s right on verging on a total loss of 65kg. I am doing strength weights (and stair machine marathons) at the PCYC as well as push ups at home. Friends tell me my shape is changing every time they see me so it must be doing me good. Reckon it must be because my strength (in the exercises I’m doing) has doubled in the 10-12weeks I’ve been going.
I’ve been trying to get fitter as I’m applying for a job which has a fitness test as part of the selection process. My current job will end Dec-Jan when construction ends.
My boss has offered me work as an industrial cleaner afterward, so there’s that to fall back on. Or the dole, I could live on that seeing as I’m debt free and own my house/cars etc. I’m not keen on industrial cleaning or the dole though.
Well done to the dieters though, it is not easy…

Went swimming with my phone yesterday…as you may be aware, I wear it in my bra as I can’t hear it and the children have set it to vibrate for me…put it in my togs to cycle the 4 blocks from office to pool, got to talking to someone and forgot to remove it…75 metres later my phone is vibrating…damn!
We are going to see if our “take me to your dealer” chap can do anything with it…
The wrist thingies are great…together with the weight vest, they make me walk properly

The weight vest is excellent. The idea is to give you extra weight to make your heart rate go up (moderately) without having to run to achieve the same result. The trouble with running (after 5 pregnancies in my 30’s) is it gives me all sorts of injuries now…the heart rate range was set by a sports physiologist…I thought it was OTT too, but now I hate walking without it…makes you watch your posture and work your legs properly…the vest distributes the extra weight onto your body so it’s not weighting down any particular part of the body…just straight down the legs to your feet…go for it!

Another idea, always popular with any lady, is a massage voucher? That’s how I got MrD into his monthly remedial massages: bought him an half-hour for his birthday once, the Chiro said it would be more to the point to pay for massages than the chiro and away MrD goes, the first Monday of the month (after his haircut…)…

Oh, my mum is so contrary in some ways :) She can’t stand the idea of any kind of massage, whether it’s for relaxation or health benefit. Likewise she can’t stand the idea of anything at all “day spa” like, and I can’t get her any nice soaps or anything because she’s allergic to scented things!
But that’s OK, there are always movie vouchers and bottles of Baileys to fall back on :D Actually now that my brothers have moved out of her house, I could branch out into DVDs..

I had my first massage last year: MrD treated me when down in Brisneyland…it was fantastic but I feel it to be indulgent…
Also, I hate people fiddling with my hair and will go months without a haircut…hate the shampoo / scalp massage routine…

Today is my day off from rhythmic exercise…supposedly…but it’s yours truly who’ll be walking the mutt tonight…
Doing gardening (shovelling shite) and housework instead…
The sports physio said one should always have a day off once a week, from the exercise programme…tell you what, I look forward to it sometimes!

Anybody tried the whey powders? Supposed to supply protein but not calories, and help develop lean muscle mass in a hurry (make your exercise routines more productive of lean muscle mass)…

not quite the same stuff. Whey milk is what’s left over after the milk has been curdled and strained (eg for cheese or yoghurt making.) Still has a lot of goodness in it like protein, vitamins, minerals and lactose. Some people who have an intolerance to milk can still have whey milk. Protein shakes can be based on whey milk with other stuff added.

Ahh, OK. The stuff my brother has is a powder, he mixes it up into a shake with milk himself. I’ve never really looked at the tub it comes in, just remember seeing the word protein :)
