Subject: Bromeliads

After visiting the Garden Expo in Adelaide and seeing some of the magnificent bromeliads in flower,i came home full of bright(?) ideas.In the green house we have several growing and would like to take cuttings and pot them up.Does anyone know as to what potting mixture to use,doe they require fertilizer,etc etc.Any information would be appreciated.Regards…………AL

You don’t take cuttings as such. They produce pups from the base of the parent plant. There are lots of people who make up their own mix based on pine bark but if you’re like me and a bit unsure Cymbidium mix is good.
Fertilising is a matter of opinion too. I don’t, but I know someone with lovely broms who adds about 1/2 teasp slow release fert when he pots.

I should have said to wait until the pup is at least 1/3 adult size and then cut it off with a sharp knife.

Yea,Lucky1,we went on Saturday,it was great.If i have any critisism it was the amount of people that were there.The organisers would have been rubbing their hands together.Regards,,AL

On the Friday it wasn’t over crowed as all you poor bugger would have been at work. Have no idea how parking was done as we used public transport.

B/L,thanks for the info,do i dig a cutting out of the soil,or do i cut it off like you said with a knife?When can i do this?now,or wait for cooler weather.I get your drift with the orchid mix,i was thinking of putting some scoria in the base of the pot to help with drainage…………… AL

Just cut it off as close to the parent as you can. Anytime’s OK. No need to add more drainage if you use the right mix.
Also the friend who adds slow release makes his own mix, you wont need to add any to the orchid mix because it’s already there.

Well, I dunnit.Having looked at the “pup” growing on the floor of the shadehouse for some time,it is now in a pot of orchid mix and scoria base.In went the required slow release and a long drink.If it lives it lives,if it falls off the perch I will try again.BTW how long for bromeliads to flower? also The Bromeliad Soc in SA has a show on the 15 and 16th of March Regards…………AL

It varies greatly. Some take years.

Brom shows are great for buying at reasonable prices.
