Is sprite lightning interacting with the Earths magnetic field to create aurora’s. Isn’t that about where the height is?

I think the explanation given on the page is pretty good.

Interestingly, that page didn’t come up on my Justin. I wonder why?

I’ve noticed before that some of buffy’s ABC news stories don’t come up on my Justin, too.

Last time I checked, the aurora was actually 100 km up and higher, which surprised me no end.

The sprite is about 50 km up.

The other alternative is that it may be posted in the science pages and doesn’t necessarily have to appear on Justin.

beautiful, so cosmic radiation doesn’t have anything to do with it?

From the link

But where auroras are produced by charged particles continuously stream from the sun,
sprites are produced by brief pulses of electromagnetism from powerful thunderstorms.

It’s a lot of nitrogen being excited into a giant space neon sign.”

interaction between thunderstorms and the ionosphere

It is thought that one of the ingredients required to produce a sprite, is a positive lightning bolt where electrons flow from the ground up to a cloud.

There are some quite good high speed camera videos of sprites.

Don’t ask me why this happens. I haven’t a clue.
