I’ll get it right eventually! LOL.
I am not particularly au fait with Kev Carmody’s work apart from this song, but I have become a huge fan of Paul Kelly’s in recent years. I love this song and the sentiment that goes with it. It doesn’t only apply to land rights issues. See for instance how is was used by a Brisbane school (Zillemer State School) some years back with the kids all involved

The story is from Kev and his people.. but the chorus and the chords are Pauls infectious style.. sadly without Pal’s contribution, this song may have only have been heard by afew.. Thus I’ll give Paul a lot of credit in this and other of his works.
Thank you AnneS. :)
Never heard it before but that was kinda catchy, especially with the uplifting vid.
has been one of my fave songs since it first appeared.. andI’m as big a PK fan as there is..
I do enjoy Kev Carmody as well..but then it is hard to find music or poetry that I cannot find something to interest me in

Those weren’t the original words of course and the tune was changed as well. You should hunt out the original.

Wow! Amazing to think that all that was going on as recently as the ’60s. I knew that ‘wages’ for indigenous people were a handshake and a penny back many many years before the ’60s but I had no idea they were still so recently being taken advantage of so badly. I’ve grown up in a time where women have the right to vote, indigenous people have the right to vote, the dollar was the currency and everything was metric. I vaguely remember black and white TV but it’s amazing to think that it was only a few years before my time that the thinking was still so outdated.

Yeah I just posted the kid one to show how they took the sentiment of the chorus and applied it to their own situation. I just found it inspiring as a way of building self-esteem in young people…one of the main goals of Girl Guides which I am very passionate about.
“Zillmere is located in the lowest socio-economic 10% of the State. The project was designed to give the children a sense of pride in their capacity to achieve as well as to engage the school population (incl parents) more effectively with one another and the broader community.”pepe said:
