NASA Astrobiologists Have Recreated The Deep-Sea Origins of Life in The Lab

Over four billion years ago, when Earth was turbulent and new, a strange spark of life grew into existence. We’re not entirely sure how it happened, but evidence suggests it was deep under the sea, far below the reach of the Sun’s rays.

Yeah, no.

1) The best method for creating organic molecules is still lightning. Other methods, such as the Sun’s UV light and geothermal heat, have a lower yield.

2) Organic polymers, such as proteins are only produced by evaporation, which is impossible in the deep sea. It has to be on the sea surface, or above.

3) Large organic molecules float. Which also rules out a deep sea origin.
