So now that I’m at uni, GPA’s are thing and I’m wondering if there is any use to them outside of a university/academic setting?

Some people have been mentioning that their GPA is 7 (out of 7), despite the best (worst) efforts of their engineering lecturers.

Accepting that “P’s get degrees”, is there any point in worrying about keeping my GPA high? Will it serve any function in my post uni life?

Ofcourse I’m going to do my best in every unit, regardless of worrying about my GPA.

I wouldn’t have a clue what the gpa of anyone I’ve ever worked with was.

It may help with getting you in the door on your FIRST job. After that I doubt it will make much difference at all.

Also, I’m not sure that I’d want to work with an engineer who had a gpa of 7. Boring springs immediately to mind.

Uni degrees are as common as arseholes these days, so first/grad job wise, you’ll get culled pretty quick with a low GPA in most professions – suggests anecdata from some recent graduates I’ve spoken to anyway.

Based on overall unit grade. You get an allocated amount of points for the grade. HD=6, D=5 etc

In short, no.

Employers look for skills, not academic merit (theoretically).

It’s usually only used for things like honours admission or scholarships, but some employers that are in industries that are highly sought after or have big pools of candidates can use them as ways to separate potential employees.

D average, C average etc used to matter enormously in the workplace. Employers used to actively seek out degrees with higher averages.
