Subject: Smallest baby successfully treated

The boy, believed to be the smallest to have been successfully treated, was born at 24 weeks via emergency caesarean section at Tokyo’s Keio University Hospital in August.

In his five months at the hospital, he grew from 268 grams to a reported weight of 3,283 grams before being discharged two months after his due date.

“I can only say I’m happy that he has grown this big because honestly, I wasn’t sure he could survive,” the boy’s mother said, according to the hospital.

Asked mrs m. Normal weight for a baby is 3-4 kg. One thing i remember is that premature babies can have very underdeveloped lungs. Something about the surfactant on the inner surface of the lungs is also involved.

Premmie babies can have issues with their lungs and their bowels as they are the last things to be fine tuned at the end of gestation .
