Blackbirds? Rat traps work very well. Blackbirds find red and black fruits hard to resist. Not that this will stop enough blackbirds as the next day another family will arrive to take the space from any native birds that may want it.
This method though will not only keep blackbirds and chooks from digging up seedlings but it will also stop the pigeons from eating all the seeds and seedlings and cats from using it as a dunny. Will likely keep most dogs off as well.

The bits of mesh were originally used to put tree tubes in. I was no longer using so many of them for this purpose but rather than toss them away, put them to this use. They are good idea because each one can be moved away to weed under it without having to lift a large sheet. In reality, I should leave them there next time because they would assist in keeeping the delicate plants from attack by the wind and thus keep them flowering longer.

I also use old bits of window screening gauze to cover things like radish seedlings that the crested pigeons think I plant for them to eat.
