Subject: Is my rhubarb too old?

My family has been moving our rhubarb for years – from house to house for about 40 years. In my latest house I can’t get it to take off – stems are small, it is not very sun tolerant, and basically takes a lot of work to just make it survive. I have fed it heaps of manure but to no avail. It has sentimental value as it comes from the house I grew up in but is it too old?

Should I just start again?

Maybe you should have given it more shade this past year.

yes rhubarb like lots of water and part shade, some morning sun and afternoon shade is good.
maybe pot it up into some nice Searles potting mix and see if you can get it going again. It may well then sprout up in a few places thus allowing you to split it up in the future.

Rhubarb also is a heavy feeder.

The one thing it cannot tolerate is full Aussie sun without a permanent dribble of water on a well drained but very fertile soil. Even then It still needs at least all afternoon in some sort of shade.
