What petitions would you support?

Please exclude all petitions you’d support that refer to a specific person.

I’m after “what is wrong with the system and the best way to fix it” types of petitions.

How about the ‘Henry VI, Part 2, Act IV, Scene 2’ petition?

‘Offensive language’ is a tough one.

I’ve met lesbian who were offended by terms like ‘manhandle’ and ‘manslaughter’.

We’re at 950,000 signatures on the Anning petition, and the voting rate looks to have come up to nearly 500/min.

Biggest electronic petition ever in Australia by a wide margin.

I must insist the guillotine be built only from sustainably harvested timber with an Australian made steel blade.

I signed the Anning one, but there’s a stupid petition out there to “revoke Brenton Tarrant’s Australian citizenship”.

That would amount to Australia washing its hands of any responsibility in this matter.

I’m sure many Kiwis would prefer that he be deported back to Australia to serve his time here, so they don’t have to foot the huge bill for keeping him in a maximum security prison for the rest of his days.

When did the OK gesture turn into a white power gesture? It’s news to me.

White power symbol
In 2017, the OK gesture was at the center of an online prank in meme culture related to alt-right and white supremacy originating from anonymous message board posts on the website 4chan. The Boston Globe reported that users on 4chan’s “/pol/” (Politically Incorrect) board were instructed in February 2017 to “flood Twitter and other social media websites…claiming that the OK hand sign is a symbol of white supremacy,” as part of a campaign dubbed “Operation O-KKK”. The association of the gesture with white supremacy derived from the assertion that the three upheld fingers resemble a ‘W’ and the circle made with the thumb and forefinger resemble the head of a ‘P’, together standing for “white power”. While some members of the alt-right used the symbol after the launch of the 4chan campaign, it remained ambiguous whether or not it was being used to communicate genuine adherence to white supremacy, or with deliberately ironic motives. In May 2017, the Anti-Defamation League published an article asking:

Has the simple thumb-and-forefinger ‘OK’ hand gesture become a common white supremacist hand sign? Not quite, but it has become a popular gesture used by people across several segments of the right and far right—including some actual white supremacists—who generally use it to trigger reactions. Only if the gesture occurs in context with other clear indicators of white supremacy can one draw that conclusion.

By 2018, a number of people were accused of signaling support for white supremacist ideology in publicly displaying the gesture. For example, the U.S. Coast Guard disciplined an employee who conspicuously made this gesture in the background of a newscast in September 2018. And in March 2019, self-avowed white supremacist Brenton Tarrant, charged with the terrorist shooting of 50 worshippers in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, flashed the sign to cameras in the courtroom where he was being arraigned.. This last input is actually incorrect. The White Power Symbol is always portrayed with the hand pointing up. In Brenton Tarrant’s case, his hand was pointing down and directly in front of his groin as part of “The Circle Game”

In Brenton Tarrant’s case, his hand was pointing down and directly in front of his groin as part of “The Circle Game”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OK_gesture#White_power_symbol

2017 is too fucking recent for me.

They let me read it and I’m certainly not a Murdoch subscriber.

But trying it again, they won’t let me back there.

Anyway, it didn’t say much. Just that Labor was accusing that group of using the white power gesture and demanding an investigation, while the LNP spokesperson said it was just an OK sign.

Given that there’s an LNP MP in the snap with them, it seems unlikely it was intended to be a racist sign.

OK I got rid of any theaustralian cookies and tried again, and it let me in. Here’s the story:

Labor has called on Malcolm Turnbull to launch an inquiry into “extremist behaviour” in the Liberal National Party after members of its youth branch were pictured giving an “OK” hand gesture, which can be associated with white supremacist movements.

A group of Young LNP members were photographed alongside LNP senator James McGrath this month while campaigning in Longman, with some making the “OK” sign. The photo also was tweeted by Senator McGrath but later taken down.

However, it had not been removed from the Young LNP Facebook page by deadline last night.

LNP sources said Senator McGrath’s post was deleted because the photo contained a corflute with a message the party had not yet decided to use and did not want released. The hand gesture had not been noticed.

Revelations of the existence of the photo come just days out from the Super Saturday by-elections, with the contest for the marginal Queensland seat of Longman neck-and-neck between the LNP and Labor.

The men making the gesture — including Timothy Wright, Mortimer Duff and Mitchell Ablett-Nelson — declined to comment when contacted yesterday.

Sources aware of the photo said the gesture was not deliberate and those making it believed it was simply a “hunky dory”, “everything’s OK” sign. They also said the men were not aware of any white-power connotations or associations with right-wing groups, and it was a gesture many people had made since childhood.

The Australian was sent photos of former US president Barack Obama, former prime minister Kevin Rudd and comedian Ricky Gervais making the “OK” sign.

The sign began as a prank several years ago but has since been embraced by members of the white nationalist alt-right movement.

Controversial alt-right figure Milo Yiannopoulos has posed with the hand sign and an intern for US President Donald Trump, Jack Breuer, came under fire after he was photographed in the White House making the gesture.

Four Alabama police officers were recently suspended after being accused of making the symbol in a photo following an arrest.

Queensland Labor MP Murray Watt said it was “disgraceful”, and the Prime Minister needed to investigate how far extremist behaviour had infiltrated the LNP.

Every time something in Tassie gets run from Victoria it has problems. If I though it could get rid of some of the corruption I might vote yes. I need more convincing. If more power was put into local government at the same time I might be in.

Abolish the states…

Nah, just Queensland.

Fine we’ve got all the coal, we’ll be rich because we wont have to share.
And we’ll build a wall with tick gates ever thousand yards patrolled by Boarder Security in Toyotas.
Some might get through but they wont get far with their contraband of tofu, soy sausages, lip balm and men’s cosmetics.
And there’ll be no interconnectors with busted arsed states with their prehistoric windmills and pagan Gaia rituals.

Your terms are acceptable.

You could try a more rigid demarcation of what states and the feds do to prevent some of the blame passing. This may involve a flight from some states to others but that may not be such a bad thing, is Tasmania really viable as a state if it stood alone in its state govt responsibilities?

Rather than abolish states, I reckon there should be a push to create new federal territories. As a way of promoting regional development and building new cities to ease the pressure on the existing capital cities.

Only snag is the states would have to agree to cede the land for the new territory to be created.

Is it working as well in the Northern Territory as it is working for Canberra?

I’m thinking much smaller areas, more like lots of little Canberras rather than large swathes of land like the NT. Like a small city-state(territory) with a small area of hinterland, probably more like the A.C.T. but maybe a bit smaller.

I dunno, mate, seems like all the problems are being caused by you bloody Queenslanders at the moment. Can’t you get back to talking about the weather and leave the rest of us to get on with the job of cleaning up your mess?

What about if we tell you we’ve abolished all the states, would that do?

We’re the victims here. FA only got 19 votes. On average, Qlders don’t like fascists either…

The evidence would suggest otherwise. Just saying….

The evidence would suggest that the first quota was obtained by the ALP

I was being sarcastic. Things are bonnie in the ACT. They have good salaries and a good lifestyle. NT has the army sent in and the Indue card. They even have leprosy and deafness and blindness caused by treatable diseases.

He wasn’t a born and bred? I don’t think the kiwis would want to hand him over. Remember what happened when they haded over the rainbow warrior guy?

I thought about this too. Remember that the French thought backward NZ wouldn’t notice strangers driving on their roads and the saboteurs would be able to get away? I thought something about this person also misjudging them.

They still have active TB clinics in the NT. It’s our own little 3rd world.

Local government could do that.

It means having only local and Federal level government. Over here the state government overrides local council decisions all the time.

I see it as a pathway to abolition at some later stage, when there are so many territories that the rump states don’t really matter for much any more. Abolition by stealth, you could say.

Once the extra territory’s governments are formed they will fiercely resist abolition.

You don’t have create a territory level government. Being a smallish area they are the local council too. They deal with all the usual local government stuff plus a few extra bits of planning.

Larger, more powerful Councils plus a Federal Government would mean less levels of government. If there was a clear division of responsibilities then there would be very little cross-blaming occurring.

The petition has hit 1.3mil signatures, and the GoFundMe campaign to buy EggBoy more eggs is at $55,000.

I’m making the call – This federal election is going to be a bloodbath for the right.

Will be interesting to see what happens in this weekend’s NSW election and whether there is a backlash against Labor for their preference deals.
