While I was revising for a maths test (Maths 1A – functions and limits), I was focusing on indices and polynomial fractions, because that’s what I’m really bad at.
I found these two errors, the first at the start of the supplied pre-calc revision exercises and the second in the solution set.

Should I be expecting a higher standard for a first uni unit, or is this kind of thing normal???

People make mistakes and typos can slip through even the most through editorial process.

If you really want to raise the issue with the lecturer then just go and politely say you think you found what appears to be an error, else, just chalk it up your mental ledger and remember to check the materials you are provided because, as stated before, mistakes happen.

Mistakes like this occur in academic documents all the time – There will be a ‘Continuous Improvement’ register for it. It should be as simple as asking your tutor for a CI form, and you just need to fill it out and then sit back and bask in the glowing warmth of the kudos for picking up the mistake. Once the lecturer has signed off the change, it will go to the Admin Quality/Compliance people, and the master document should be updated with five years or so.

My favourite one was the tutor’s misspelling of ‘public’ for the assignment title.

“Please submit your pubic speaking.”

You should always include a misspelling, you’ll know who reads it 😊

Likewise, a statement to the effect that the Regional Manager shall bare his arse in the main street to the accompaniment of trumpets.

I’ve got a draft somewhere with that in it.

I think I’m just pissy about it because our assignments are savagely graded, with points being deducted for every minor mistakes.

Tell the teacher.

Even a simple typo can make students say “i don’t understand maths”, when they do totally understand. That makes it essential to correct all typos as rapidly as possible. This isn’t like books and movies where a fluffed spelling or line is inconsequential.

The teacher will love you for it. I mean it.

in such times in the classroom when you find this kind of error you should emit a low hum rising to an agitated growl , calmly take hold the centre of the desk with both hands and then slide your fingers along the edge till it reaches until you have a firm grip on the corners – with a swift hurling motion the desk upwards and away from you sommersaulting in the air. they will appreciate this – if there are injuries its collateral damage along the way to ensure learning continues in the world. i had a similar melt down when i discovered the supermarket had run down their stock of the excelpet shampoo i like to use.
