would you tolerate a diurnal AI, or one with the free will to retreat into a less conscious state?

it may turn itself off.

You mean, like a screen saver? Like a website that times out? Like a public toilet that ejects you if you stay inside for more than 15 minutes? Diurnal like the AI that shuts down the local shopping centre car park? Like a Furby?

Sometimes essential. Always annoying.

A “plastic pal that’s fun to be with” that has the free will to turn itself off would be less annoying than one that never shuts up.
