I wish there was such a thing as a good font.

I have trouble with Times New Roman, for example, because they leave far too much space after the “y” and not enough space before the “!”.

For Sans Serif fonts, neither Calibri nor Arial is ideal. Both are too wide, and Arial Narrow has other problems.

Nothing is good for handwriting script, the letters without risers and descenders are invariably too short.

Those fonts that have numbers larger than letters, such as that used on wikipedia, make me scream in frustration.

And don’t even start me off on fonts in Excel and Gimp. And as for how fonts handle greek letters and mathematical symbols – aagh.

Bring back TeX and LaTeX fonts. Now they are good, but having to type first and view later and having error messages relating to line length throughout the document is a pain.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, times new Roman is the only font accepted for uni essays. I have always assumed because it’s the easiest to decipher and skim read through. Although the capital I and lower case l are tricky. But then one would look at context I presume.

Really? I understand they should set a standard so people don’t choose some weird font but why that one? Nothing wrong with it, its just a bit plain, bordering on ugly…

Yes. I’d prefer all my reading matter to printed in something a bit more interesting .. wingdings maybe.

Most lecturers have said that if they don’t specify the font, people actually do choose really inappropriate ones. It’s the red envelope theory… by standing out they will get noticed more… this may work for competition entries, but they forget that content is more important than presentation in essays. It would be horrible to be marking essays, get to you fifteen one, and have too decifer curlees or something.

I did preclude “weird fonts”. It’s just if I am reading a 10000 word essay, especially multiple essays, I’d want something easier on the eye…

All my letters to specialists and doctors are written in Times New Roman. I’ve used it forever. Since word processors started. And I come from the time when letters were typed on a typewriter. And it was a really big deal when we got one that had a memory for I can’t remember how many characters…
