I thought this might be of interest to fans of watches on the forum.

From book “Practical lubrication” by B. Pugh.

Watches, clocks, etc. – Light mineral oils, clarified sperm, neatsfoot, olive and porpoise.

I didn’t even know “porpoise oil” was a thing.

What do you think of the prospects for DNA testing of watch oils?

Pugh, B., 1970. Practical Lubrication. Seems to be referenced in several discussions on viscosity.

Whale oils were extensively used in clock and watch lubrications right up to the international ban on whaling. Could well still be, since Japan wants to kill a lot of whales and they make some of the finest watch lubricants.
