I planted 6 nandina facing north in my front garden 3 years ago.
this year they have not turned the beautiful reddish shade like others i have seen locally.
What could be the reason why?

temperature it seems affects Nandina. I believe it takes a cold spell to really trigger the red, but I am not 100% sure on this….

What climate are you in?

I agree with Pain master. It can also depend on how protected they are from the cold I think. Maybe yours are more protected than they were in previous years. Has something nearby grown larger to give them protection? Just a thought.
