Subject: Jury Service.

I just got a letter for jury service again.

I hate jury service.

I don’t like trial by jury of peers, there is no professional decision making, which should be done by professionals, ie solicitors, barristers, queens counsels or Judges

It is a shortcut for doing the job properly, instead of paying a team of judges to do professional work, the government gets in the public with no legal training and get them to do it at a fraction of the cost.

Most jurors have no legal training of which 4 years in required to understand the legal system.

How are you as a juror supposed in have any trust in yourself as a juror when you have had no legal training and also have trust in other jurors who also have no legal training?

You are making decisions that might put away a person for life or spend some time in jail and have trust in the system that the job has been done properly which when, there is no training required or given that the job cannot be done properly, when you know that the outcome will not be as good as it should be?

How can the job be done properly which any idea of legal training is dismissed,

A job which should be done by Professionals and paid properly for is dismissed.

The Government are using the public who are asked to do the job of professionals and paid at fraction of the cost of what professionals get paid.

Also they are many people running for Federal parliament who have no legal training either.

Their main job is to make law.

Reading up on the history of trial by jury, and the reasons for its introduction, would not be a bad idea.

Did we ever work out how we could nominate a legal language when we don’t have a nominated legal language to nominate it in?

Nup we need a referendum for constitutional change to do that.

It is your civic duty to turn up, and if selected to be on the jury to do it properly. To ensure that, in spite of your arguments against the jury system, the person in your case gets a fair and reasonable trial, and a properly considered verdict.

When I get the 4 years training required to do the job, and then get paid properly for doing that job, then yes I will do it.

^This

Except in your first week of uni with an 11 year old and a 7 y.o. and an increasingly unreliable partner.

Or….I’m not a citizen, but they can still request me to sit on a jury, to tell me I can’t be selected because I am not a citizen.

I might have one based on a technicality. We speak the Queen’s English and all aspects of the legal system are performed in her name so maybe we just need the same language that the monarch uses.

The Jury, Barristers and judges all have different roles.

The Jury’s job is to decide the facts of the case.
The Barristers’ job is to present and test the facts and sometimes which laws should apply.
The Judge’s job is to run the room and decide the penalty (if the jury decides the charges are proven).

Other than a little critical thinking, what training do you think a Jury would benefit from?
