Well timed Bob :)
He saved the Franklin, amongst other stuff. A decent bloke, in most regards.

Aww damn.
A private funeral? No no no no no, that’s not the way it’s done. It needs to be all bells and whistles and put up on YouTube like Diana’s funeral.
If anyone gets sacked for not showing up for work tomorrow, the boss is a bum!

Yeah, but what was the next bit…
I’m reading some obits and can’t believe none (so far) have mentioned his Guinness record for beer drinking. UnAustralian.
I wonder if he voted?
Bye Bob.
We are all getting old.

I’m sure I’ve seen TV news footage of him voting (presumably for himself) on election day, as is customary.

It was something about working twice as hard the next day to make up for it.

Yes, the spirit of the accord. Or a tiny back step from a frivolous moment in the moment.

Bob Hawke enjoying a bath, in his childhood home of Bordertown, South Australia.

Bob losing his faith in India, 1952.

“On Christmas Eve they put on a big spread for us in the home of one of the wealthy Christians there… there were these big grounds with tables spread out, loaded with food, and I looked out and there at the gates were these poor Indians just looking in. I remember they were singing one hymn that said: the world of Christ we bring, Christ to the world, we bring. And I thought, ‘Christ to the world, the world to Christ, there’s the world, starving’, and I just left. I went back to my digs and got some warm clothing I had and gathered it up and went down to where these kids were lying cold in the streets.”
“When Dad was home that was exciting because he wasn’t home much. Whatever time you got with him was considered a bonus, really, because he belonged to everyone else. We knew that we came second; you know, his job was first always.”
Ros Dillon, Bob Hawke’s daughter

“I’ve known Bob since Caulfield Cup day 1972 and since then, we’ve had a lot of laughs, a lot of good times, and I love him … He’s pretty soft under it all. Even though he’s tough, he’s still got his soft side to him.”
Col Cunningham, Bob Hawke’s best mate

“Dad had classic Labor values. He grew up in the union movement, essentially. It wasn’t just a job to him; it was something he believed in.”
Stephen Hawke, Bob Hawke’s son

“Bob was an absolutely brilliant prime minister. He touched every leadership base you can think of. He had a very strong sense of policy direction, he was an excellent communicator to the public, the world at large, he was charismatic to go with it and he was a terrific manager of people.”
Gareth Evans, former Hawke cabinet minister

It was this aspect of Bob that most endeared him to my family. We moved here at the start of the Franklin Dam war, and it was so gratifying having another Bob (more powerful than the Brown one :)) coming to the rescue at the end of it.
Bob also promised a billion trees and I did my bit to help.
Yes indeed, we have never had another PM quite as remarkable as Bob Hawke.
Not so well known were his achievements around education. When Hawke came to office in 1983, Australia had one of the lowest high-school retention rates in the developed world. Just 30% completed year 12. When he left office that number had increased to 70%. You can only imagine the difference that made to this country.

He was an intellectual of greatness.
Tony Blair on Bob:
Bob Hawke was a huge figure and someone I deeply admired, liked and learned from, a genuine giant in anyone’s politics. He was an immensely successful leader of Australia but he also impacted all of us round the world who were looking for a sustainable model of Government which combined strong economies with high levels of social justice and investment in the most disadvantaged sections of society. Sharp, with a marvellous strategic political mind, and concealing a first class intellect behind that friendly and ‘good bloke’ exterior, he was wonderful and warm company, and from the first time I met him back in 1982 always willing to reach out and help younger politicians. A true model for so many of us. He will be greatly missed.

Aye.
When my younger sister died I was told a story about her sitting next to Bob on a plane trip between Sydney and Brisbane. My older sister told me that she was so glad she’d dressed Annie in some decent hand-me-downs, ie some of her designer wear clothing that she had out grown or gotten bored with.
My younger sister was an outspoken person – compared to me she was a lioness, I’m just a cat. She was an artist, a Lismore resident…she wouldn’t be dressed in fashion items :D and I really would like to know what Bob Hawke made of her. The outward appearance not matching the person’s conversation. Apparently they had a long discussion about many things.

Got to say, Morrison’s comments on Hawke were very generous, appropriate, statesmanlike and non-partisan.

Presumably Tony Abbott also wants to win in Warringah but his statement on Hawke makes him (ie Abbott) look like a grub.

Tony has always been an arrogant prick and he’s held the seat for 25 years. He thinks he can still do it.
