The technology exists to just drill a few natural gas wells in the nearby area and pipe the gas to where it is needed, rather than developing a new technique to harness the energy of an already burning crater.

Worth more as a tourist attraction i expect. Disaster is entertainment and all the best tourist attractions are disasters.
