Justin Amash was elected to the US Congress as part of the Tea Party wave in 2010. He is a very conservative Republican, favouring small governments, low taxes and limited executive power. He is the head of the libertarian-leaning Liberty Caucus as well as a founding member of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus. He was reelected in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.
During the Obama years he made frequent attacks on Obama on the basis of executive overreach, and was opposed to military interventions authorised by the President, on the basis of his view that only Congress should be able to authorise military actions. He was and is opposed to the Affordable Care Act and has been part of the movement to dismantle it. He believes ghat the Constitution does not allow strong Federal action on State issues. Unlike many Republicans, he opposes the gerrymandering of congressional districts and supports independent commissions to draw boundaries.
Amash is unusual in that under the Trump presidency he has continued to oppose presidential excess. In particular he has expressed the view that some of Trump’s executive actions have curtailed civil liberties.
Recently he published a series of Tweets outlining the case for impeachment of President Trump. The case is clearly being made from a conservative and constitutional perspective. As yet, zero other Congressional Republicans have backed his call, though some of said they respect his brave stance and that clearly the Mueller Report raises concerns: it may at least lead some Republicans and Independents to read the damned thing.
He makes a cogent, analytical case and I’ll post the tweets in subsequent posts.
