A new wood could drop a building’s temperature and reduce cooling costs

Now, a new type of wood that radiates heat into space could offer some relief. The material, if used on a building’s exterior, could drop a building’s temperature as much as 10°C and reduce cooling costs as much as 35%.

I see in the article that the wood has a high density, but i still wonder about its durability.

Timber cladding has always been a high-maintenance material, and you have to be prepared to look after it and keep it painted etc. I find it astounding that people who go for that ‘log-cabin’ look with varnished timber mostly don’t seem to realise this, and their houses look quite crappy after a couple of years.

I’m voting this hype of the year. Possibly hype of the century.

Cladding a building in white material to reflect solar radiation is not exactly a new idea.

No, just an ordinary practical sort of bloke, full of bright ideas.

Someone should supply him with big piles of hemp stalks. So he can sit down and weave them together and build a wall.

Um, I can think of some worse hype involving wood, and I have to admit to egg on face as I fell for it.

Transparent wood.
