Subject: Kimberley under threat

That dreadful environmental vandal is looking to destroy more. This is your children’s heritage.

On Saturday morning I was shocked to wake up to news that Australia’s richest person Gina Rinehart has just proposed one of Australia’s largest ever irrigation properties along the iconic Fitzroy River!

Her plan would see her taking 325 billion litres of water a year from the river to grow food for cows. To give this perspective, the largest irrigation property in the Southern Hemisphere is the Cubbie Station cotton farm at the headwaters of the Murray-Darling. This station uses an average of 200 billion litres of water each year.

To stop Gina Rinehart’s water grab please sign here.

Mrs Rinehart’s company has called this a “water rescue”. This follows from her comments that 99% of the waters that flow through the Fitzroy River are wasted.

But we know this is far from true. We know the floodwaters support National Heritage listed cultural and environmental values, including being the world’s last stronghold for the critically endangered freshwater sawfish.

The proposal has come as part of an attempted deal to trade areas of Rinehart’s pastoral lease into a National Park in exchange for a massive water license. Let our Ministers know that the National Heritage listed free flows of the Fitzroy are too important to be bargained away.

This giant irrigation scheme would require massive new dams on the floodplains, and lead the Fitzroy down a disastrous path like the Murray-Darling. It is a serious new threat to our work to ensure the protection of this iconic river.

Could you take a few moments to contact the Ministers responsible for the future of the Fitzroy? Please urge them to reject this proposal and get on with the job of protecting the Fitzroy River.

Thanks for your help!

?

Another excuse for theft of water from the land itself.

How rich does one have to be to be a rich bitch?

I thought building big dams over unspoilt rivers went out of fashion in the 1980s.

I can’t see the plan being a success at any rate. Given the failures of establishing agriculture in the Ord Scheme. If she really wants to grow feed for her cattle, let her do this within the Ord Scheme, where there is already a huge dam bult and land set aside for agriculture. She can spend her money on building railway line from the Kununurra through the remote Kimberley cattle stations, and benefit the whole region.

More children need to put the hard word on the adults.

My own six year old granddaughter read the recent election flyers in the mailbox and pronounced it a scare campaign to force people into doing just that.

Update:

Fitzroy River in danger

The Fitzroy River, lifeblood of the Kimberley, is under grave threat. Gina Rinehart has finally revealed what she wants to take from this precious ecosystem – billions of litres of water per year from the river itself. The only way this can be done is through massive pumps, big channels dug from the river or big walls to hold back floodwater.

This is exactly how the ecological catastrophe of the Murray–Darling river system has come about.

Please sign here to send a message to the WA Government not to give in to this proposal

According to news reports, Ms Rinehart has offered land that could go into national park in exchange for freehold land for crops and a dam. It is a presumptuous plan – she doesn’t own the land, she’s renting it. The McGowan Government has a mandate to take areas of public land out of pastoral leases and, with Traditional Owners’ consent, convert them into national park, as promised at the last election.

Make sure you let the government know how you feel

Ms Rinehart’s plan is to take 325 billion litres of water from the river each year to grow fodder for cattle. To put this into perspective: the largest irrigation property in the Southern Hemisphere at present is the Cubbie Station cotton farm at the headwaters of the Murray-Darling. This station uses an average of 200 billion litres of water each year.

This proposal is a land and water grab of humongous proportions. Gina’s scheme would use up the same amount of land as the Ord River irrigation Area’s stages 1 & 2 combined. I was reminded how vast this is when I visited Kununurra last week: it took an hour to drive to from one end to the other.

To stop Gina Rinehart’s water grab please sign here

The Fitzroy River is National Heritage listed for a reason – it has cultural and natural values that are nationally significant and deserve protection. The River is facing mounting threats from climate change, and I revealed to the media last week that there was a mass fish kill of critically endangered Sawfish on Gina Rinehart’s Liveringa lease in December. Researchers are saying that overheated water caused by climate change and poor rainfall will continue to be a threat to the species. Any reduction in the river’s flow can only make matters worse. The government must protect the Sawfish from more stress by refusing to allow water to be taken out of the Fitzroy for irrigation; let’s work together to make sure they hear our message loud and clear.

Please urge them to reject this proposal and get on with the job of protecting the Fitzroy River.

This in no way justifies Rinehart raping the thing, but here’s some figures:

Such development will destroy considerable areas of undeveloped country and will introduce weeds, feral animals, various diseases, etc., and as far as environmental matters are concerned, it will be a disaster. The Kimberley is largely an untouched treasure trove complete with its natural ecosystems, but which is now being exploited like never before and we are likely to lose something that is unique and can never be replaced. There aren’t many of these places left and we should be protecting them for generation to come and the wonders that they are.

It is not just the water, most of the damage will be done to the land in order to grow the grass/whatever, plus providing a more suitable habitat for weeds, etc.
