US energy department rebrands gas exports ‘molecules of freedom’

The US Department of Energy said the expansion of a Texas facility meant more “molecules of US freedom” could be produced and exported worldwide.

The facility, based in Quintana, produces liquified natural gas (LNG).

The move was a clear indication of US commitment to promoting clean energy, the statement said.

But the rebranding comes amid a Trump administration push to roll back climate change legislation introduced by Mr Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, which targeted vehicle emissions.

It is a geopolitical move clearly aimed at Russia and the EU. The EU buy lots and lots and lots and lots of gas from Russia. Making them a little bit reluctant to stand up to Putin, especially in winter time. The US have a clear geopolitical policy to export gas to Europe instead, so as to limit Russian influence.

Wouldn’t that be more inconvenient for those EU nations though

Buying in liquefied natural gas, or standing up to Putin?

I think the EU leaders would see the benefits in it.

Either or both I suppose.
It’s not good to be held to ransom over energy supplies, another good reason to invest in renewables can’t have a foreign power preventing you using it.

No. So from a geopolitical perspective if you are stuck in this bind, diversify your suppliers and spread your risk amongst a number of very dissimilar countries.

I wish someone had coined that phrase for coal seam gas.
