Yah. Late night watching frays the brain but what a match it has been between England and Seth Efrica. Some awesome fielding by the English side has SA struggling at 7 for 184 chasing 312 at the moment 36.3 overs in.
Don’t think I can stay up and watch all of it. Shame but having seen Ben Stokes take that catch which will be all over the news in the breakfast shows, is enough excitement for one night..
SA gone for 207.
it is frosting again, I can feel it. I’m off to wrap up in the doona.

I saw some of the pommie innings this morning. They appear to have a strong lineup this year and are looking confident.
Let’s hope they fall on their faces again.

Pakistan falling in a heap here .. 8/81 from 18.3 overs.
Just switched over at half time during the footy. This game will be all over by the time the footy is done.

All out for 105. Now I don’t watch all that much one day cricket but I don’t think that’s a particularly god score.

Yes, it’s a bit on the brown side, as ODI scores go.
WI 3/108 from 13.4 overs.
Bit of a thrashing.
C Gayle 50 from 34. Was flying early on but then seemed to hurt his back and didn’t look comfortable after that.

A bit more than just a bit… I guess.
SL 6/638 from 16 overs… struggling a bit to get a decent score.
Very green looking pitch, NZ won the toss and elected to bowl. Guess we wont know the true state of the wicket till both sides have had a bowl on it.

This is the ting with those sort of catches, the hand underneath the ball always depresses the grass a little bit so it looks like the ball is touching the surface. Should have been out IMHO too.

.. and NZ have cruised to a 10 wicket victory, 0/137 in 16.1 overs.
Once again the crowd don’t get even 50 overs to watch. Ripped off.
South Africa wearing green pants with a yellow shirt.
I feel a bit blah about this.
Bangers going well. 2/160 after 25 overs. Should be looking at something over 300 at this rate.
Bangers lose a wicket
3 / 217 after 35.1
Bangers 6 / 330 from 50 overs. Their highest ever score in ODIs.
Saffers are gunna have to bat very well to chase this one down. Key will be the difference in bowling styles, Saffers mostly pace attack, Bangers have mostly spin.

66 - The number of not-in-control runs scored by Bangladesh, the highest in any World Cup game since the start of the 2003 edition. Shakib was the major contributor with 21, followed by Soumya Sarkar (13) and Mushfiqur (12).
Shakib the all-round giant
When he dismissed Aiden Markram, Shakib Al Hasan reached 250 ODI wickets and became the fastest cricketer to achieve the double of 250 wickets and 5000 runs.

I’m guessing it is when the ball goes in a direction other than where the batsman intended but still scores runs. A top edge pull shot that carries the rope for six, a thick outside edge that beats the keeper or slip and runs away for four. That sort of thing. There were a few such shots in the Bangers innings – but i didn’t think it was any more or less than what happens in a normal game of cricket.

PAK 2 / 176 after 30 overs.
Going by the usual rule of thumb, if the batting side have wickets in hand they should just about double their score in the last 20 overs.
Heading for something well north of 300 at this rate.

I reckon they’ll need about 340. Seems like a small and odd shaped ground.
Bugger.
300 up with 4 overs to go. Could be some fireworks.
Wheels are falling off just a tad; although to be expected.
PAK 8/348 of 50 completed.
For all that, I reckon it’s just about a par score for this small ground. England are good at chasing down big totals at home. They can’t afford a collapse of course, but they could get this.
Sadly I have no expensive scotch to stay up drinking tonight, so I’ll probably head off to bed soon. Too bad I can’t watch the England innings.

There’s been a couple of those in the last two matches I’ve watched. Where the stumps are clearly hit but no lights came on and no bails came off.

Last night he walked out at 3/275 with 7 overs left. Exactly the circumstance where you want a player to play a Maxwell innings. Which he did rather well, I must admit. My problem is that this circumstance does not happen very often, it is when he walks out at 3/100 with 25 overs remaining and tries to play the same innings that irritates me. He has to have an orthodox game that he can play for 10 overs before stitching to reckless abandon mode. He has never won a game or rescued a game for Australia by making a big score in reckless abandon mode – in this mode he always gets out sooner or later. This sort of innings is a useful cameo to finish off the work already done by the top order, but is never a match winner of itself.
I’m no Finch fan but his innings last night from what I saw on the highlights was all quality.

They don’t all wear helmets. Just the batters… they report an okayness With staying out, it’s the fielders that don’t like it.
Pakistan have pulled this back quite well.
Also a waterlogged ball doesn’t bounce as high as a dry one. Also slippery to hold for the bowler, impossible to bowl accurately if the ball is slipping from your fingers at the release point.

Damn, SA really faded, huh?
If, as seems likely, they lose this match, they don’t really have a believable path to the semis.

commentators are full of shit. Maxwell hit it straight to the fielder and took off for a run that wasn’t his call. If Khawaja did anything wrong it was not yelling NO! earlier. That throw would have had him stranded by metres too.
Well, it’s a commanding total.
Ah well they’ve put themselves in a position where it is not impossible… still have 6 wickets in hand, but the required RR is > 2 runs per ball.
SL 9/232 from their 50 overs.

Should be noted that the Ghan dismissed Sri Lanka for 201 earlier in the comp and managed to lose that match so India are still in a red hot go here.
Lot of dot balls though. The bowling is competent but they are treating it as though they are facing Grimmett and O’Reilly in tandem.8/224 after 50

Yeah. but it is not quite 30 overs yet. the old adage is double the score at 30 overs if they have wickets in hand. If they can get to 3/150 by the 30 over mark they should go close to 300. They need 309.

Yeah, call me melodramatic but I am off Australia being any chance to win the tournament now.
The two issues everyone has been talking about, the inability of the lower order to finish off good starts, and the lack of a really good spinner. Finch has come good as an opener, and Warner and Smith are back, but the rest of the order is the same problems we have had for the last 12 months. Nobody is really consistent enough.

Gap between bat and pad just about the width of the ball, ball went right through the middle between them, not clearly striking either one, but a very very faint edge on snicko. Ground umpire gave it not out, was given out on TV appeal. I think it should have stayed not out.

PAK win, and are still alive in the competition.
Pakistan win with 2 balls to spare. Afg lose another close one. Looks as though they will not win a match in the comp but they have some moments to be proud of I didntd see the match but the commentators are saying the umpiring was bad, in Pakistan’s favour

Didn’t get there, all out 286. Shame, Bangers out, India are through to the semis.
The dream is over for Bangladesh.
Technically NZ could miss out: if they lose to England and Pakistan beats Bangladesh, AND Pakistan beats them on net run rate. I consider that last part of the equation very unlikely as NZ is way ahead on NRR presently.
So really it is down to England and Pakistan for the 4th slot. In the absence of washouts (or ties), Pakistan will qualify if the beat Bangladesh and NZ beat England.
The remaining matches should all be good contests.
Afghanistan have not got over the line yet but they’ve had close matches and using resources well, whereas the Windies are not looking well.
NZ v England, each seeking to shore up a semis berth.
Resurgent Pakistan versus solid Bangladesh should also be a good one.
Home-and-hosed Australia versus playing-for-pride South Africa. Similar dynamic in the SL v India game.

“If England post a big score, say 380+ , surely New Zealand will have in their mind to get a decent score of 300, rather than going for the target and getting bundled out for 150? The net run-rate factor might help England get a result here.”

That’s right Chris. Net run rate or something.
I think I’ve worked it out.
If a team needed 300 runs to win, but only 200 runs to proceed to the next round and:
Batting style A gave them a 50% chance of 200 runs and a 10% chance of 300 runs, but
Batting style B gave them a 60% chance of 200 runs but only a 5% chance of 300 runs,
then clearly Batting style B would be the one to go for, even though it halved their chance of winning.

Bit of a dead rubber tonight. WI v AFG. I think AFG have given it a big honest effort this tournament but just are not quite up to the same standard as everyone else. WI have been disappointing after a bright start. Too many individuals in the team IMHO.

AFG top score this tournament has been 262. This looks beyond their reach.
West Indies 6 / 311 from their 50. They plundered over 100 from the last 10 overs.

South Africa got 325. Will require quite a decent chase from Aus to get close to that. Shame for the yarpie he got caught on the boundary going for his hundred off the last ball. I’m less and less sold on Cummings as this tournament has gone on, he bowls way too short at the death.

That’s a bit of a bummer. Aus will now play Engerland in the semi. That will be be a tough game. They have the benefit of home crowds and local knowledge etc. Would vastly have preferred to be playing NZ in the semi and let all the media attention be upon India and England match-up.
Ah well. Was not expecting Aussies to go all that well in this tournament, so they have exceeded my expectations already. But if they want to win it they will have to do it the hard way.

I disagree, I think it is quite fair. Another way of looking at it, could New Zealand win two games in a row against any two of those three teams? I don’t think so. Their biggest weakness is that rely on too much on too few and don’t have the same depth of talent that those other teams have. If their big names don’t perform they don’t have someone else to make up the difference.

Reading some comments over on the Gran. I’m actually quite stunned and am wondering what game I was watching. There’e people, and it appears they are mainly Indian fans, who are pilling onto Dhoni and it is somehow all his fault and he’s a selfish player etc etc.
I’m rather gobsmacked.

Never be surprised how quickly Indian fans can turn on their own team after a loss. They are worse than the British.

I was going for “NO WINNER” and that’s the is was excecpt for some technicality.
“New Zealand – 241 for 8 in 50 overs. England – 241 all out in 50 overs. Super Over. England – 15 for no loss. New Zealand – 15 for 1, Martin Guptill run out off the last ball. England win the World Cup, for the first time, on boundary count. It was about as dramatic insane as a cricket match has ever been.”

But surly in any measure of importance wickets are the second most meaningful metric after runs.
So NZ lost 8 wickets in the 50 overs and Poms lost 10 wickets.
The winner is New Zealand.
That’s it until next time when New Zealand will attempt to defend their title in 2023 in India.

If the rules had been laid out that wickets were more meaningful then England would have played the final overs in a different manner. They played to the conditions.
I might be in error. See paragraph 13 in Appendix F of the ICC Laws.
