What things are possible to automate in the home?

I have bought a new book

Raspberry Pi Home Automation with Arduino by Andrew K. Dennis

I have a Raspberry Pi, now getting an Arduino.

Then I will have the front end for my projects. The Raspberry Pi will be running the home automation software for taking to the Arduino which will be controlling the temperature sensors and motors etc

The projects

Winter automatic outside insulated blinds that come down when the temperature falls below 12 degree Celsius
Summer automatic ceiling exhaust fans that come on when cooler changes arrive after a hot day.

Another project will be checking if the letterbox has a letter in it.

I can see you out there, stuffing a letter in your letting box, to see if the letter-in-letter-box-detector is working.

The Addams Family had Thing for that.

Tons of things can be done in the home. Google Home et al have quite comprehensive things they do. It’s great to allow disabled people to remain longer in their homes when they can voice activate equipment.

I know raspberry pi is different. We only use ours to play movies, but my sister and BIL use theirs for home security.

Might design a letter box which can do a high five to the postie but only if the postie puts up their hand.

Thing would make a good letter box

Cause it lived in a black box.

hmmm

I saw this scarecrow, a skull riding a motorbike and thought that would make a good letter box

Not sure which is better now. Might think on it.

Yike. No idea.

Try watching “Some mothers do ave em”, the episode “George’s house”.

Plot summary from https://www.steve-p.org/sm/smdae1.htm

“Frank and Betty are staying with Betty’s brother, George, a futuristic designer who has filled his house with remote-controlled gadgetry. George is expecting an important visit from Mr Fletcher, the head of a large building firm, who is interested in a demonstration of the mechanical devices in the house, so Frank is on his best behaviour.

“While trying to use the mechanical toilet, Frank accidentally breaks the flushing mechanism. His attempts to repair this soon lead to the toilet brush, a ballcock and his slippers becoming wedged in the pan. By now water from the leaking cistern is seeping through the house and finding its way down to the control room in the cellar. The others attempt to prevent Mr Fletcher noticing the various mounting problems, but Frank is already at work trying to repair things. His efforts cause a major short circuit of the house’s systems – Betty’s sister-in-law gets jammed in an electric window and Mr Fletcher himself becomes trapped in an automatic chair. Fletcher storms out of the house refusing to sign a contract for the technology.”

Automatic recliner chairs cost $750 to $1500.

You might be able to make one for under $100.
If you can, let me know. Please.
