A bit of history:

In 2001 I moved into my 2-bedroom 7-square cottage (measuring precisely 8 metres x 8 metres) on a one-acre block in Ben Lomond, Northern Tablelands of NSW, a single mum with two boys aged 4 and11.

Some photos of that garden are on my Photobucket site:

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v421/Yeehah/

Look in the little box on the left hand side, click on the sub-albums “2004 Ben Lomond Snow” and “2004-05 Ben Lomond Vegie Patch”. Somehow I managed to delete the album with the photos of my chookhouses, darn it.

Also on my blog, bits about the cottage on the acre are at:

http://yeehahsgarden.blogspot.com/

For a chronological look at the site, start by clicking on “January 2006” under the heading “Archives” in the left hand column. If you go down the Archive list in order, it will read like a book, but do remember that a blog “page” reads from the bottom up.

ANYWAY,

at the moment we have got a little vegie patch going (that’s the “rental vegie patch” in the blog), and the orchard consists of apple, quince, plum, pear trees and small fruit including blueberries, raspberries, black/red/whitecurrants, elderberries, etc, plus odds and sods like roses and asparagus and comfrey, all in about 70 pots up the back yard. We’ll be planting out like mad come winter, although we still have to decide what to do about tree guards. The kangaroos and wallabies are vicious on the bush block. It’ll be okay when we’re living out there – the dogs will scare the native tree-nibblers off.

We should be out at the block setting up the camp atm, only Mr Y got a phone call last night and he’s at work for a couple of hours. And the BoM forecast has changed to include afternoon showers and thunderstorms, so I’ve had Littlemiss (8yo stepdaughter) in tears because we might not go after all, depending on what the weather is like when Dad gets home. The 25 acres isn’t going anywhere, though!

yeehah roos and wallabies don’t like the smell of pure charlie carp so sprayed around the trees and on the leaves will help for a while at least until it gets washed off. The best and safest idea if you can is make stiff wirenetting guards for them until they get (a) high enough or (b) until you move out there we did this and had a couple 6 ft high (23ft mesh on top of each other. We used 2 stardroppers to each net guard to hold them up and that frustrated the roos no end. It also keeps the rabbits from ringbarking the lower stems too.

Ta, Drylander. We were thinking of something along those lines, good to know it’ll work.

youre welcome Yeehah good to see ya back. another less PC way of getting them to stay from trees is to invite them to a BBQ with them as the main course LOL
Definately look out for rabbits though as they are more destructive than roos usually

Can’t see that happening, haven’t got any “forms of persuasion” that will get them lying down voluntarily and turning themselves into steaks!

Groan…..goats……. I love ‘em…….I’m so jealous. I used to look after a herd of 8 when I left school, delightful creatures but not the brightest. I’ve always wanted one. Don’t think this is the place for them though.

my sister has goats on her property near Bega. she started with one to try and control blackberry growth and just kept on getting more.

Actually they are very intelligent animals and easily trained. We had several boer goats before the drought and they were really good to have and quite funny at times. Also very clever when you put playthings in their yard

In that case I apologise to the goat fraternity! it’s a long long time since I left school. We never tried training them of course :)

Hey Lucky! Did you read the bit about the survival skills of the rhubarb in the latest post on my blog??

>> When he was living in the tent Dave had fenced off an area that he’d planted some apple trees and some other plants in – and had forgotten all about the rhubarb; thought it was dead. So Lucky (the rhubarb murderer) will be stunned to learn that in the midst of that sandy desert I discovered a sprouting rhubarb crown!!! See, hunny bunny, you’re just living in the wrong climate for rhubarb, we can’t even kill ours with a bluddy bulldozer!!!! <<

We went out for a drive to the block again this afternoon, and the rhubarb is growing about where Littlemiss’s bedroom will be. (I’ve got half a dozen more clinging to life in foam boxes in the back yard here so no tragedy if it gets concreted over!) Apart from the bulldozer going over it, the sandy soil, no water except for rainfall, the only thing I can figure out that you do to rhubarb to kill it with such alarming regularity is that you fry it – with air temperature, that is. The Survivor Rhubarb on the bush block has probably never seen a day over 30oC. And it dies right back to nothing in winter because of the cold. So maybe the answer to “why won’t rhubarb grow in Adelaide” is the same as “why won’t brussels sprouts grow in Adelaide” – climate! Too many days over 30oC, and not enough under 0oC.
