The Dish, Parkes, gears up for open days to celebrate 50 years since moon landing.

Open days at the observatory are planned for the weekend of July 20 and 21 and all are invited.

We’ll be opening up the telescope for free tours so people can come inside and see the control room.

Used to be a decent Cafe at the visitors centre at the dish. Wonder if it’s still there.

Not much to see in Parkes though…

Once the new Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail line is completed Parkes will be the town at the intersection of that rail line and the main east-west (Sydney – Adeliade – Perth) line. It might result in some new industry setting up in the town to take advantage of that strategic logistics location.

Hopefully this does not create too much interference and radio noise for the Dish, if Parkes undergoes an economic boom.

We found Parkes really nice, friendly, not expensive, and the Elvis Museum and Classic Car Museum were pretty good, too.

Parkes is closer to Sydney than I thought.

Only a 72 hour walk.
