Subject: Degenerative brain disease found in NRL players

CTE, or Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, is commonly found in US footballers, and has now been found in 2 Australians who played NRL. Their identities are confidential.

Caused by repeated concussions and blows to the head, CTE exhibits symptoms akin to Alzheimer’s Disease, however, it is only with a post-mortem of the brain that CTE can definitively be proven.

They’re still getting concussions though.

And there was a movie made about it too

The helmets don’t help. The concussion is caused by the brain bouncing around inside the skull. Helmets tend to stop skull fractures. There is some suggestion that players wearing helmets is worse because they hit harder and have more violent g-forces inside their heads.

This.

In early days of bike helmets, some of the helmets actually caused skull factures.
