French Scientists Claim to Have Created Metallic Hydrogen

Scientists have long speculated that at the heart of a gas giant, the laws of material physics undergo some radical changes. In these kinds of extreme pressure environments, hydrogen gas is compressed to the point that it actually becomes a metal. For years, scientists have been looking for a way to create metallic hydrogen synthetically because of the endless applications it would offer.

Can all gases and liquids be compressed into a metal?

Um, i think not, but … Um.

If you compresd carbon enough then you get “degenerate matter”, which hss delocalised electrons like a metal, but all six electrons are delocalised instesd of just the valence four. But does it pass through a metallic state first. Probably can.

Most elements are already metals. Those that aren’t include the noble gases. They would be the most difficult to make into metals.

I’ll look into it.

I thought it had already been found.

Agree.

> reached pressures of 425 GPa and temperatures of 80 K

OK. That’s high pressure for any experiment on Earth.

Really….really……….really.

Christ, science journalism has perhaps reached its nadir.

You and moll should get together and compare notes, probably very similar.

Nah, I just think that in all my years of reading scientific literature no-one has ever mentioned a single application where metallic hydrogen is required.

Science fiction maybe.

They are saying that it would remain a metal when returned to room temperature/pressures and would be a super conductor with application in the electrical field amongst others.
