Subject: Woodworking question?
Father in law had a damaged wooden benchtop (bar top in solid, very heavy, wood) and i want to inlay some moderately expensive wood into the damaged area. Two patches of damage roughly 5 cm by 5 cm by 0.5 cm deep.
What wood would look good and where can i buy it? Walnut? Rosewood? Ebony?

well, i read the OP and figured he didn’t know what type of wood, as he didn’t mention it and gave only a vague description, so thought it pointless asking that.

I was imagining the new inlay bits would be decorative rather then trying to blend in with the original.
For me, the question is how to install them neatly.

Or what else the position of the damage might suggest. They could be in the perfect spot to mount a beer tap, or a glasses rack, or to cut a penetration for a champagne bucket…. or something.

Something like that. Even cutting in and inserting some extra inlay into the undamaged bits to make a pattern might look nice.

Only in the west, mate. The only jarrah we get over this side is bloody 70×10 sawn garden edging at Bunnings.
In Vic it would be redgum or ironbark, wouldn’t it?

Whoa, hadn’t been watching this thread.
Great answers.
Unfirtunately i have no idea what the original bar timber is (two timbers, main and trim), only that never before in my life have i felt such a dense timber. Unfortunately i don’t have a photo, i think.
The only thing other than inlay i could mount there would be a door.
