There’s an article on the Gran about plans for electricity to be transmitted via a HVDC link from the NT to Singapore.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jul/14/just-a-matter-of-when-the-20bn-plan-to-power-singapore-with-australian-solar

I think it’s a grand idea and remember espousing similar in threads on ye old SSSF. I then had a look at the company that are hoping for funding to get the idea off the ground.

3 GW of energy

I do despair.

I assume this is 3 GW in addition to the 4 GW we already have from solar power in Australia, the extra 3 GW to be shared between Australia and South East Asia.

China’s solar power is already 55 GW, up by 15 GW on last year.

Because GW is not a unit of energy. If they cannot get that right then I doubt I’d trust them with 20 billion dollars.

Go with the flow sibeen, invest your spare pennies in real estate around Tennant Creek. You’ll make a fortune.

I see your point. They are probably congenital idiots. 3 GW is a suitable amount of power to aim for.

Can someone explain why a watt is not a unit?

A watt IS a unit. A unit of power.

You can’t have 3 GW of energy.

That’s sibeen’s point.

Watt is a unit of power
Joules is a unit of energy

News reports often get the two mixed up.

It’s like talking about 3 kg of volume, or a length of 3 Joules.

The power generated by a power station is measured in multiples of the watt, typically megawatts or  gigawatts.
Electricity production and consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours (or mega, giga, tera etc).

They’re closely related concepts.
