Subject: Study Finds Insects Can Experience Chronic Pain

The more science studies life, the more complex and less robotic it is and contrary to a once a common opinion.

>>Over 15 years ago, researchers found that insects, and fruit flies in particular, feel something akin to acute pain called “nociception.” When they encounter extreme heat, cold or physically harmful stimuli, they react, much in the same way humans react to pain. Now, scientists have found that the nervous systems of insects can also experience chronic pain. A new study in the journal Science Advances shows pain lingers throuhout the insects’ short lives well after an injury has healed.<<

The more we learn about insects, the more we realise what little difference a large brain makes. Insects are startlingly human-like.

> “After the animal is hurt once badly, they are hypersensitive and try to protect themselves for the rest of their lives, That’s kind of cool and intuitive.”

An interesting study in pain, and practical from a human medical perspective.

I no longer kill snails by treading on them. Once I did that and the snail survived but seemed to be in extreme pain. My empathy related to that pain.

possibly a misleading simplification itself, but hooky.

Try reading philosopher and early scientific opinion on non-human life. It is generally very condescending
