Great News! The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Might be Named for Vera Rubin
The U.S. House of Representatives have passed a bill to change the name of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST.) Instead of that explanatory yet cumbersome name, it will be named after American astronomer Vera Rubin. Rubin is well-known for her pioneering work in discovering dark matter.

Why does the heading have “might”, if a bill has been passed.

I’ve been a fan of Vera Rubin since the mid 1970s.

Also it would have to be signed by the President. He’s blocking the Tubman Twenty so it might be he has some kind of problem recognising women …

“Stigler’s law of eponymy”, states that no scientific discovery is named after its original discoverer.
LOL.

What sort of crazy political correctness is it when the name of a telescope has to be approved by the USA Federal Government then signed off by the president?

Appears that it is technical reasons and nothing to do with Trump.
In May 2019 Mnuchin stated that no new imagery will be unveiled until 2026, and that a new bill won’t go into circulation until 2028. In making the announcement, Mnuchin blamed the delay on technical reasons. However, an employee within the Bureau of Engraving and Printing told the New York Times that at the time of the announcement “the design appeared to be far along in the process.” Democratic members of the House of Representatives asked Mnuchin to provide more specific reasons for the delay. In response, a number individuals and businesses have begun producing rubber stamps by which an image of Tubman can be printed on top of that of Jackson

I think we should also give thanks to the fact that the art of forging has not increased in skill or technique and the fact that the technical resources available to these ne’er do wells are completely archaic.

What they should do is find some quote from Harriet to use on the note and then misspell one word over and over again. Can’t beat that for a security measure…

LOL, the actual engraving is just that. They security measures incorporated in the note are the things that stop forging. Surely they have those worked out by now? Sheesh Australia has. You are never going to stop counterfeiting, it is just a matter of how good you can make the fakes. US bills have always looked dead easy.

in the days of the Aus paper notes one of the hardest parts to reproduce accurately, with the tech available at the time, was the black engraved part of the note. This was for two reasons. One, the lines were very fine and closely spaced making copying difficult. The other reason was that the black was printed using the itaglio method and thus resulting in a print that was raised. You could feel the black image on a new note. No other printing process resulted in a raised image.

another hard part to reproduce was the coloured bands. These were done using the letterset process, raised plate on an offset machine. There was a split duct used and the ink transfer roller was cut into segments. The oscillation of the rollers was also turned off. hard to reproduce with using a screen which would be obvious.
