Subject: Mammal nests?

Following on from thoughts about bedding for homeless people, aborigines, gorillas and zoo animals.

What is known about mammal nests?
Eg stick-nest rat
Like a rat’s nest
Do brushtail and ringtail possums make nests?
Do rabbits carry bedding material into their burrows? Other burrowing mammals? Pika, mole rat?
What about bears?
Do beavers carry soft bedding material into their lodges?
Dormice?

Are these nests for adult mammals sleeping? Or, like birds, only for babies and for courting?

Ringtail possums make their own dreys, which look like messy bird nests up in the trees. They use them for shelter and, I think, for nesting too.

Brushtail possums need tree hollows (they do not make dreys).

Thanks for that, speedy.

I have seen a brushtail during the day in what looked like a nest among small tree branches, but that could easily have been just one having a bad day until it could find a hollow.

Yes, it probably was having a bad day. They are usually the species of possum that people find in their roof spaces, so they will resort to the next best thing if hollows are scarce.
