So yesterday I rear ended a Lancer at low speed and managed to put a few cracks in his bumper. I don’t want to go through insurance so the other driver agreed to get a quote and email it to me.
Is $1400 reasonable? It’s $500 labour and $600 parts + GST.

Any thoughts car minded people?

Not a car minded person, but most smash repairers don’t get out of bed for under $1,000. It pays to shop around.

That’s what I thought.
I’m torn between asking the very nice man to get another quote or just paying for my sins and making it all go away.

Your excess on the insurance claim is about the price of the parts. ie: a Toyota Corolla rear bumper was $600 five years ago.

I have a $850 excess and then I think I’d lose my no claim bonus so totally not worth it.

You usually don’t lose your no claim bonus for a minor dingle. It can’t hurt to ask.

I don’t use the insurance unless I have to.

Last time (um, don’t ask how it happened, too embarrassing) I had a broken tail light and a dent in the rear where the tail light fitted. Bought a new tail light for about $230, put it in myself with help from mrs m, and left the dent because the smash repairer’s quote was exorbitant (more than $2,000) and, because the tail light is new, nobody notices the dent. total cost $230.

Time before, missy had been run into from behind which smashed the rear window. Found a smash repairer who would fit an entire rear hatch, sourced from a junkyard, for about $600, hardly more than the excess on insurance that i’d have to pay anyway, so had it fixed without bothering insurance.

Huge differences in price between different smash repairers.

Sounds a bit high of it is just the bumper and not lights as well. I hit a kangaroo in a lancer and it was new bonnet, headlight /indicators and mudguard panel work, that was about 2 and a bit grand. The bonnet itself was fairly cheap, bloke reckoned Lancer parts are plentiful new or from wreckers albeit fronts and rears are obviously rarer.

With cracks it is possible to get it plastic welded but paint matching can be expensive.

Of course if someone else is paying it’s tempting, (and usual if you are dealing with an insurer) to get a few other things fixed, they don’t send out assessers for smallish claims.

Usual thing is to ask for three quotes.

And on eBay rear bumpers for lancers vary but an average of about 300 bucks add panel beaters 10% and other gubbins like clips etc, approx 500 might be about right albeit at the very upper end.

Oops reread, 600 bucks for parts seems well out of order if it is just the bumper.

I don’t know if this will work but it may, you said the other bloke was nice, maybe he can claim on his insurance, it shouldn’t affect his premium if it’s not his fault and you pay his excess for him.

If it is deemed “not their fault”, then the insurance company will attempt to recover their costs from the “at fault” party.

Get one or two more quotes, which will be likely similar, and pay up, I’m afraid. Not that I am a car expert.

Yes, I saw this. Again more evidence, as if more was needed, that Boris is really shit at keeping the riff-raff out.
