>>While most parrots today are small enough to perch on your shoulder, you probably wouldn’t want to do that with a newly discovered ancient ancestor of the bird. Palaeontologists in New Zealand have now uncovered the remains of Heracles inexpectatus, an extinct giant parrot that would have stood hip-high to most people and packed a beak powerful enough to crack open pretty much whatever it wanted to.<<

That’s a terrible illustration. Two out of three figures are in silhouette and one isn’t, whilst the human figure has no feet…

Woman shadow looks like it is borrowed from James Bond beginning.

I assumes her feet are straight on.. and yes, it looks like she is holding a weapon…

The magpie also looks like it was lifted directly from the collingwood emblem…

Strange the things that interest small minds. Wonders if they were born that way or have acquired it in places like this.

Waiting at a bus stop and too engrossed in her screen to notice the big birdies.

Not sure, it looks like a Kea to me. Kea photo. OK, just kidding, a Kea isn’t as big as a mountain.

> a giant penguin that could have looked a human in the eye.

That’s news to me, too.

Following link to technical paper: https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsbl.2019.0467

“Early Miocene”, circa 20 million years ago.

“an estimated mass of 7 kg, double that of the heaviest known parrot, the kakapo”.

Hold on, only twice the weight of a kakapo. A kakapo is 58 to 64 cm in length, which puts … No, the kakapo has a mass of only 2 kg, so Heracles is 3.5 times the weight of a kakapo, not double.

OK, so the Charlie’s Angel comparison of half the height of a human is wrong. It’s more like a third of the height of a human. That, I can believe much more easily.

“Tibiotarsus”, so only have leg bones.

If it stands 3’3’‘ in height, then it would easily by half the height of a tall person.

I was hoping someone would catch me out on that. Something is fishy about those two diagrams, they can’t both be right.
