The best thing about home made is it can be made to fit the body shape for the intended person of fashion.

that’s why I wanted to sew again, but this one is just a basic T-shirt pattern. Once I get more confident I am going to try and make more fitted stuff.
very swish – but oh the plunging neckline woh!!
the fabric looks steely – hangon – its a bluegreen colour isn’t it ?

The most wonderful thing is each different colour wool makes all socks so different.
I’d was going to be knitting your sleeves of the cardy…just too hot for 12 ply wool. So I am waiting for the cooler weather to arrive.

just ribbing you – no its a really brilliant home made garment – there should be more of it.
now all you need is a bit of writing on the back – ‘heavy metal’ or some such saying.

Yes they are called “Double Point Needles” or DPNS for short. Most of mine are done with stitches on 3 DPNs and then the 4th needle is used to knit from one needle to the next.

They are lovely. I don’t see knitted booties being used much these days. Maybe that’s because I’m in Q.
One thing about not getting out in the garden with my stupid leg…. I’m getting some knitting done and items finished.
Baby coat …4 ply and for sale…..

I am with you about being stuck in the house, except I can’t do much :(
I really have been doing something, even though I haven’t had time for the forum lately…

This saga is not yet finished… I wanted to make bigger wreaths, but the ones I ordered from the US disappeared into Quarantine and I suspect won’t be coming back out. This little one I found at the local op shop, and I’d already bought the air plants (expensive!! o.O), so thought I’d make myself a little wreath.
My mum’s since managed to find some twig wreaths in an almost-local store, so I’ll go and pick up two more to make up as Christmas presents.

Oh I should also say… I found the idea in “An Hour in the Garden” by Meredith Kirton – would never think of such a crafty thing by myself :D
I like :)
should be plenty of wreaths becoming available in stores this time of year.
Oh they are lovely Bon:D
What a great idea. My sister loves air plants has has a lot.

These ones were $6 each at Bunnings.. couldn’t find them anywhere else.
Thanks bg and Lucky :) I like “An Hour in the Garden” – nice little projects that don’t intimidate me :)
I love homemade stuff… eats & non eating stuff…….. because the stuff (love that word) comes from their heart of someone …. we often know:) Makes it priceless in my books.
Very nice Bon, unusual :)

I have been thinking about this for awhile now and I’d like to ask some sewing ladies here……. for a first timer…what sort of sewing machine should I buy????
I want it for making t-shits… small items…baby clothes when the grandkids arrive……alos what sort of $$$ will I be looking at.?
Lucky1 said:

on “talk-like-a-pirate-day” you’d be adding an “Rrrrrr” to that comment me guess?

I know I’m not a sewing lady, but I will start the discussion off with… back in my Home Ec days, the teacher taught us to use the old zig-zag stitch to hem off on t-shirt (optional r) material, but if you’re gonna get serious with making baby clothes and stuff, then I’d look at getting an overlocker thingo…
and a lot of machines nowadays have the button hole and pattern thingo going, so I’d aim at one of those…
and buy a machine with a reputable name… if it looks plastic and has a name like “Sinder” instead of “Singer” then chances are its a cheap import from SE-Asia. Don’t buy it from Cunnos, go to Spotlight or similar.
I bought a Brother machine on special from Spotlight for $359..got all the stiches and whatnot. It will do me for mending and making things for years to come. Of course theres way more exp machines but I just wanted a basic machine. But for T shirts and stretchy materials, you can’t go past an overlocker..lerve mine.

I have a Husqvarna. It is 26 years old and still going strong. It seems most new machines sold these days are more for craft work – embroidery & such and probably outside your price range anyway, so I would be looking for a reliable 2nd hand machine. If you want to do T-shirts etc. then you need to make sure it has a stretch stitch so that the seams give with the fabric. I have also recently acquired an overlocker but not done much with that as yet. These will do professional type seams using 3 or 4 threads and will trim and overlock your seam as you sew but not any use for just basic stitching so I wouldn’t recommend getting one to start with. You will be able to do everything an overlocker does with a basic machine but just not as fast, and more that an overlocker can’t do. It might be worth while getting in contact with a sewing machine service technician. They would be able to advise you on which are the better machines and maybe able to source a good 2nd hand machine for you. You should be able to find one in the yellow pages or by asking at a sewing sales centre. You will find that once you get going you will be able to do so many things that will save money. Repairs, making shopping bags etc. as well as making your own clothes. Fabric can be expensive these days but I find that I am getting good stuff on ebay as people clean out their cupboards. Problem is I am collecting fabric faster than I am sewing it!

OK. You can still get basic machines at a reasonable price.
I still reckon that you get an overlocker as a second machine, not as your only machine.
I was thinking of doing what i always do when buying something new.
I make a list of what I want to do with the said item and then visit a couple of places. I was thinking of Spotlight & Lincraft.

Not getting an over locker……..just a sewing machine.
Lucky
A sewing machine :) I love sewing machines :) I love sewing :-)
First, do not buy a Singer. My experience with the modern ones – load of … Mine almost went through the window several times.
Second, rather than go to Spotlight; go to a machine store and ask to try them, using the sort of fabrics you want to work with. T-shirt fabric can be painful. I make my own t-shirts and have no problems, but I know a lot of people complain about it. One handy feature is a dual feed, which most reputable brands now have, although called a variety of names. Basically it ensures the top fabric is fed through at the same rate as the bottom fabric.
Third, make a list of everything you want it to do. I would guess that all entry level (reputable brand) machine have straight stitch, zig zag stitch (useful for finishing if you don’t have an overlocker), and buttonhole. They will also have a variety of other stitches which you may or not use (think embellishment on baby clothes).
Fourth, an overlocker is an entirely different critter to a sewing machine. You will still need a sewing machine even if you have an overlocker. An overlocker is wonderful for clothes making, but some seams must be finished with a sewing machine. Again, try one before you decide. My only recommendation – you want a four thread, not a three thread. The fourth thread is a line of straight stitching. If you buy a three thread you then have to sew all your seams on a normal machine.
I have a Pfaff. I love Pfaff. Very reliable, very solid. I test drove a Bernina (embroidery machine – my dream machine) and was very impressed. I know people who love their Janomes, Brothers and Huskies. It’s really very personal.
One thing I really like about the Pfaff – the feet all clip on and off. I noticed a lady at retreat with Janome had to unscrew and screw on her feet. I swap from my quilting foot to my open foot and back again a dozen times in a sewing session. I would hate all that mucking about. If you’re convinced you’re only going to use one foot for the majority of things – it probably wouldn’t be an issue.
I think the biggest thing is to try any machine before you buy it. Find the websites for Brother, Husquavana (sp), Pfaff, Janome (those are the four really reliable brands that come to mind), ring your local dealer and ask if you can have a demo and try out.
my Husqvarna has clip on feet too. If you do buy a new machine you will often get a free lesson as well – make sure you ask. I learnt about sewing stretch materials through “Knitwit” which was a company that has their own shops for just stretch fabric, their own patterns and also ran classes. Unfortunately they have long gone. Once you know about how to sew knits there is a lot of stuff you can make. I don’t know if there is an equivalent to Knitwit these days. I still have the instruction book (and the certificate that says I am a certified knitwit) which I could photocopy for you. It has a lot of the tricks of sewing knit fabrics in it.
This is the sewing machine I am getting for Christmas….. or as soon as its bought…lol

Just joined a sewing forum too…. the one my sister is on. I rang her…just to make sure it was okay…as she’s been there since the beginning of the year……didn’t want to step onto her turf without checking.
Spent a day with our niece Heather making her an apron. Heather picked out all the material for it.

Making any to sell at the craft stall ?
I’d buy that.
Thing is…. I’m not sure if I can sell it as its from a craft book. Not sure how I stand with that?????
In laymans terms..
If the instructions are in a purchased book , no matter who purchased it, you can make whatever item you like in whatever colour you like and as many as you like. And sell them.
It’s no different to me buying a knitting pattern and giving it to you, so you can make a cardigan I can then buy off you.

You’re welcome! I forgot to add.. when you buy an instruction book, you are purchasing the right to make what’s in it, and do with it as you please. You would be very surprised to find a clause in an instruction book that stated ‘the items you make are not to be sold on’. You wouldn’t buy it of course.

one of my Sydney friends is coming to visit in a couple of weeks, and she has offered to give me a lesson on using the overlocker I picked up from freecycle ages ago, but haven’t had a chance to use yet :)
Foundation piecing.
Building a 4.5 inch block with 2 different fabrics.
I’m making this quilt with 5 other ladies. So I have lots of helpers teach me how to do each block…over 100 of them.

We are looking at about 3 years from start to finish.
I’m also doing a quilt with my sister Deb…(sheep manure supplier) called Breast of Friends. The money raised through out it this year goes towards breast cancer.
Buy the Homespun magazine for the latest block and so much goes towards breast cancer research. Buy the kit and material (that was donated) $$$$ goes to BC Research as well. Even the designers donated their $$$ they were paid to come up with the blocks went to BC Research.
This is what 1 of the 9 blocks looks like. I’m doing mine in greens, lemons & browns…Deb in the colours in the pic as she’s a fan of those colours.
Deb & I think these quilts will be lovely to leave to our 2 girls. When we croak it:)

GF helped make a quilt up in PNG for Chesire Homes, a charity foundation for Disable kids in PNG. The quilt was made by at least 30 quilters and it was big enough to drape over a King Sized bed…

Yes. We are each making this quilt in our own colour ways. We run through how to make the block and go home and do it there. If we have problems, we contact each other about the said problem.

Oh for sure. So now my days are spent house work morning (not started yet….been bloging and stuff) and gardening/sewing afternoons.
Works for me.
I made this bag the other day for a Christmas present. Just need to sew one together for Almost Mrs. Bimbo. Very addictive to make and will make a few more yet. Though I will change from embroidery to applique flowers on the front.

It can be for what ever you want PM.
Soaps, makeup, coffee mug bag….anything.
Thought I’d show you what I have been up too and why so quiet here.
The embroidery was sent from my place back at the beginning of the year. Each month it went to a new lady and she embroidered some flowers onto my block and also sewed a 6 inch block of material for me, I am going to make this into a cushion for my bed.It arrived home last week. I too was embroidering 11 other ladies sets as well.
I joined in on the sewing forum with an advent swap. My swapper doesn’t post here, so I can show you her Christmas Day present. Each day the people who joined the swap get to open a little gift their swap partner sent them. I made lots of little things and also sent some items in the sewing range for a couple of $$ each.
The pink cushion is for a Kris Kingle we are doing in our sewing group on Tuesdays.
This cushion will go flat to our craft forum moderator for the 2010 birthday club. If I sent something I have made in for this one, I’ll get a present on my birthday from the box of birthday gifts the girls have sent it. This just needs an insert by the birthday girl.
This cushion is for our friend’s daughter who is cat crazy.:D My kind of person…lol

I’ll look forward to seeing the finished medallion.
This is what is keeping me busy.
Bimbo wants 36 of them made to be tied at the pews in the church in a bow.
Think 3 a day will be my quota, my back is feeling it today. Its satin material and I have to stitch a seam all the way round. Very fiddle as the fabric moves so easy.
You guys get to see it but no one but you lot know about it. Keep count on Face Book, for Amy’s benefit. So sshhhhh!!!…LOL
I don’t want family to know I made them until they wedding is over with,.

Hope you’re getting a lot of Brownie Points for all that work, Lucky!

no, it is so I can use it to wipe my mucky hands on! Thee gave me a few towels so now I know it works I will probably make a couple more.
Good dress saver…I should wear mine more often (gazes sorrowfully at gym outfit that has food stains from who knows when, that won’t wash out with each wash..)

yes. I only have the one apron and even then don’t always use it. So I am going to try to get into the habit of it. I find Eucalyptus oil on the greasy stains before you wash helps.
These stains are so old, BlueGreen, I really only remember what one of them is (avocado)…the rest I will probably just take SARD soap to over the weekend, they do look grubby…

I have about a dozen half aprons. I went through a phase of apron making too but I never wear them. I also used to make the old fashioned calico full ones with fabric painted motif, for a store in the town where we lived. Gee they sold well and I was a super Mum at that time.

This is what I have been fiddling with for most of day in the sewing room. Taken me 9 months to make it without rushing and making it between other items.
Very well done!

You’re getting cleverer and cleverer. Is that a word?
No, I think the term is “more clever”, but I’m only answering your question…wouldn’t have said anything otherwise…
Everything was sewn and ready to be pieced together before I went to K’s house yesterday.
This one is mine and it’ll be used to keep little fiddling things in when I go to quilting and such.

Thanks. Mrs. B asked me to make one for my niece’s kitchen tea as a prize for next Saturday. The do is being held here at my place. So I need to check my stash. We will be driving past a Spotlight this arvo on the way to a friends place for a BBQ.

ROTFL
Phew these table runners have come to an end…almost..lol
Only 2 left to hand sew the binding on and then I have made and quilted 5 all up. 2 are for us though, I’ll use them in December on the kitchen table. Ended up making an extra for my sister Deb.
Then I can start my first actual quilt. Only taken me 2 years to get game enough to make on. it’ll be a lap quilt, if that goes okay I’ll try a big one for winter next year.

Early this year I sent away a centre piece I had appliqued and today it arrived back with 8 borders done by 8 different quilting ladies.
I am so blown away and so speechless at the beauty of it. Just love it.
Now I just need to get the lining and the backing for it.

how exciting Lucky, you must have been surprised to see what all the other ladies had added!?!?

one of the themes for CWA this year is “Kids in the Kitchen”. Got a group meeting tomorrow (the state is divided into groups and then the groups into branches, so this is where people from their branches get to meet with others in their group) and one of the things we have been asked to bring is a child’s apron, so I made this today…

Oh cute!
But please be careful putting fair isle socks on bubbas feet as little digits can get caught in the cross threads. I have seen babies with very sore toes because of this and a warning was put out on TV years ago after one lil tot had to have his strangulated toes amputated.

I twisted the threads in on every stitch so there are no loops to catch little toes.

I’m sewing my little heart out and have lots on my sewing blog.
my first attempt at Or Nue, or Goldwork. Threads of gold (or in this case imitation silver) are laid in rows and stitched down with coloured thread to make a picture or design.

My spindles and the wool before it became yarn.
So last weekend I put some of my hand spun and knitted items in a small woolcraft competition in the Strong Wool Show in Benalla and I won a first and overall Champion for my spindle spun scarf, a third for the cardigan I made from my lamb’s fleece and an encouragement for a vest I made a long time ago.
You know. It is possible to make waterproof garments by not washing the lanolin out.
Congratulations by the way. :)
roughbarked said:

Yes. The guernsey being the typical example, combined with a hard twist in the yarn and tight knit to create a dense finish.

I actually made that in the 80’s when I first took up spinning. I didn’t have a sample of the fleece any more which was required to qualify in the competition, so I am taking the “encouragement” as an indication that it might have won something as well if it did. It doesn’t fit me any more but I still hang on to it and another jumper I made then too anyway. Maybe Alexander will wear it when he is bigger.
May I join this thread?
Finished it today. I had to hand sew in the sleeve linings, because I initially wasn’t going to line the sleeves and then decided the seams would fray too much if I didn’t. I think I’m reasonably happy with it.
It feels rich.

Looks like a short version of leggings (yes! I did aerobics classes in the 1980s!!) so I’ll call them shin warmers.

They are “sleeves” to wear with my sleeveless cardigan I made from Peter Pan’s fleece. I am going to Canberra in August and thought I might need them!
I was going to take a picture of how they look together but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I have bought some lovely handmade Myrtle wood buttons for the cardigan which I have yet to sew on.

That’s the idea. I am not wearing the cardigan as often as I could because sometimes I need the sleeves, at least for a while.
