Thanks Bon:D

Just so yummy to eat. I don’t leave the leave on them, as it drawns from the root crop back into the leaves.

Evening all. Sorry I haven’t been around for ages. I’ve been so busy running all over the countryside with family commitments and Girl Guide conferences etc that I never seem to have to time to come online and chat.

We have had a very dry winter and gale force winds on and off for weeks so the poor old garden has been suffering. I returned home this afternoon to lovely soaking rain after a whirlwind trip to Canberra. It’s quite steady out there at the moment and the forecast is for showers for most of the weekend.

Had #1 son home for a couple of days earlier in the week and he worked really hard in the garden for me again. This time he fertilised and mulched more of the fruit trees, dug in anad pulled the left overs from the winter crops, prepared the beds for my spring sowings and planted some Amish paste tomato lebanese cucumber, green button squash and qld blue pumpkin seedlings for me. When he was home at the beginning of September he prepared the beds and I planted King Edward, Kipfler and Spunta spuds. This week we started hilling them up as they have sprouted really well.

I have some broccoli and red drumhead cabbages poking their heads up in the seed trays so I will be able to plant them out soon into the beds that are ready.

If I can get my act into gear I might take some photos on the weekend.

Oh oh that reminds me!! Mr Bon and I had this conversation while picking slaters out from the vegie bed.

bon: Lucky put a photo up of her radish harvest today – they were amazing! So many of them!
Mr bon: Was Lucky in the photo?
bon: No…
Mr bon: That’s a pity, I bet she would have looked radishing!

Last year the elf harvested the spuds and I missed some… well over the winter months, they grew and went nuts.

The best harvest ever:D

Going to put another crop in for a summer harvest.

Its been lovely weather here and this afternoon I shelled a large cane basket of broad beans, while the elf sat and drank coffee.

In the freezer is 456 grams of broad beans. Still oodles more to come. Just under a kilo for the season so far.

Then I went out after finishing that job off and harvest more radishes (for snacking on) and even more asparagus:)

Sure is lovely having garden food coming into the kitchen:D

Did you see River Cottage Spring, Lucky? They were eating cooked broad bean tips – the leaves – and he said it made the plants bush out more too. Plus the were eating broad beans, bacon and spring onion lightly fried together and served on toast, with a sprinkle of lemon juice. It looked yummy.

My spud crop was pretty pathetic. Averaged about one for one return. My plants all died before they flowered. Most obviously died before they grew any tuber. Someone suggested to me it might have been the heat. My dad says his spuds never get any sun at all. They were there when he bought the house and he also missed digging some up so got more. I was thinking of moving one of my large tubs to the south side of the house and seeing if I had more luck with spuds (and corriander) there.

Spuds..

may grow in semi shady places but they do better in sun..

What they need is plenty water and mulch.

if you find that your soil gets too hot try growing them in old tyres. The tyres hold water inside on their concave inner surface. Fill with straw, as they grow upwards stack more tyres on.

It is said that potatoes like pea straw. Well plant them where your peas were and leave all the pea straw there.

there’s no harm in planting the littlies but if you start to get skin or internal disease buy new ones.

just remember you are now planting the grandchildren of certified spuds – i’ve done it twice and both times the yields were down and the spuds were of poor quality. the children of certified are fine – as you found out – but from then on the genes weaken – i think?

Where have I been??? I have been bean picking:) I’ve been at the front of my beans picking, bean in the middle of my beans picking, been at the back picking beans too.

Been inside to get a bean dish for my shelled beans. Been thinking where will the bean shells go?? Been thinking the compost would like the bean shells, been giving them to the chooks. Been unhappy about the beans being giving to them.

To quote Wild Eagle “Alright!!!!….Enough of the beans…..

There is some shelling to be done…

Well I’m inside for a while to get us some lunch. Jusr waiting for the loaf of bread to cool down enough for me to attack it.:D

Been very busy out the back this morning. Weeded a no did area that had lots of those weeds that creep along the top of the soil and make the area more weedy than what it is. Found 5 baby or young triple leaf parsley plants. Sorry fans of the Italian variety…not that fussed on this one.

Tied up the tomato plants and found some really cute baby sweet bite marties on the plant.

Shelled a regular size bucket of broad beans…..seem to take all morning. They are now in the freezer.

Beautiful weather outside here. Hardly any wind, cloudless sky and the chooks are out running with the ducks…….

Have you ever seen a physio about your ankle, Lucky? I’m a bit biased because my sister-in-law is a physio, but it seems like they can get to the root of a problem so quickly, and give you the right exercises to correct the problem..

Oh, noone knows how to inflict pain like a physio!! hehe, they are SO good at finding the exact bit of muscle that is misbehaving.. and then pushing their thumb in until it really, really hurts. But it’s sort of a nice kind of pain because you know it’s helping you to get better :)

Yes and a good spot easy to harvest and okay for them to stay put for about 30 years. They are sweet to eat like fresh peas from the garden.

I’m going to pick some of mine too. The leaves are huge and the lower ones are just lying flat. Might as well eat them even though you’re not supposed to in the first year.

i’m putting straw bales in place to put birdnetting over my new dwarf french beans, ….and…. the packet says plant the beans in damp soil and then don’t water until they come up…..i’ve given mine a bit of water to keep the topsoil damp ……what do you do?

pity about the rhubarb – i was going to ask you to give us a sentence in rhubarb – then i would have replied with a raspberry LOL.

I give them a good drink when I sow them……depending on the weather to whether I water them again before they germinate.
