The weather’s not looking brilliant. Considerable rain fell during the night, and another rain band is coming across Ireland now.

Hmmmm… OK. I’m going to qualify my statement by saying that if he was playing now the same as he was then he would not be competitive, is what I meant, because the modern game is a hell of a lot faster, stronger, harder and vastly more technically proficient than anything he would have faced.

I mean we’ll never know but the Test cricket ratings have been computed retrospectively: by comparing different combinations of overlapping players over the eras they supposedly have allowed for variations in the strengths of different eras.
Bradman’s peak rating under this system is 961 which he achieved in 1948. Smith’s is 947.
If you got a young Bradman and brought him to the modern era he’d certainly have some adjusting to do but I just think it is flatpack ridiculous to say that someone with his natural timing and placement skills would not get into the Test side.

Just swapped out for Overton.
All-rounder Woakes has taken nine wickets in the three Ashes Tests in the series and scored 112 runs in five innings, having also played every match of England’s victorious World Cup campaign.
“It’s hard for Chris to take, he’s been a proven performer for us throughout the summer,” said Root.
“I don’t see it as him being dropped – it’s about trying to find the best way of taking 20 wickets.

Concur. He’s one of their few world class pacemen. There’s no need to leave him out because his had a quiet series. I would like to see an evidence based case that Overton has a better chance of success.

Yeah, I thought he must have been injured when he was left out.
He’s up to this level of test cricket, handy with the bat and can break parterships and bowl for long periods when things aren’t going your way.
Anyway we’ll see, they went for a pace man rather than two all rounders in Stokes.

This commentary is somewhat less descriptive than I’m used to.
It was happenstance outside the norm. It had me stumbling over my normally erudite musings.

I was a batsman. Not great, played as an opener at sub-district level, so wasn’t a mug.I always loved watching really good batsmen and thinking about how I could emulate their play. I could dream. With Smith I couldn’t even do that as I have absolutely no idea how he does what he does.

I played a bit at school, but was always 9th drop. Fkn hopeless. Bowling is easy, you can do the same thing over and over again as long as you do it right. Batting, you have to react to whatever.

I recall in the commentary on ABC some years back, during the Golden Years, that Agnew (I think) made the observation that Langer and Hayden rarely went on with it after reaching the ton, and Kerry O’Keefe retorted that he reckoned there were a few teams in the world who wish their biggest problem was that their openers keep getting out in the low hundreds.
Then Kerry exploded in a ball of his own laughter.

Not as much as if we had enforced the follow-on.
It will take the rest of the day to get a lead of 400. I think 350 is not going to be enough after last time. Be left with one day to bowl them out, which is still a 50/50 scenario for a draw. Last thing we want is an Aussie collapse though.

I think with the amount of rain we’ve had that the bowlers shouldn’t be too badly tired. It’s not like they’ve toiled all day in the tropics for two days straight.
But you are right. I can’t recall the last time Australia enforced the follow on, usually because the bowlers need a rest.

Yeah, didn’t even manage to beat the combined score of the other 7 batsmen.
I mean say what you like about Warner, at least he is consistent.

Were I the Kwaj, I would be feeling a bit ticked off about being dropped while Warner got another crack.

Now how can we change test cricket to get more money into the sport.and more people at the grounds to create an atmosphere.
Maybe play at night with fireworks at lunch with a rock band, maybe have new rules like a batsman being sinbinned for 10 minutes if he hasent hit a boundary for a set time or penalised for taking too many singles.
Maybe we need a DJ shouting inbetween balls to rev up the crowd and top fuelers having racers around the boundary between overs.
And compress it into 4 or 3 days.
There must be something we can do.

Good to see reports that a group of Australians in Manchester overnight have foiled the activities of a gang involved in a series of robberies targeting Aussies and Kiwis in England this Northern summer. You’re welcome, Metropolitan Police Service.
This gang previously stole a valuable cup from the hands of some of our NZ neighbours in London, followed by one of their red-headed members attempting to wrestle an antique urn away from its rightful owners during a visit to Headingley.
We are glad to see the urn is back where it belongs – even if the contents appear to be badly damaged by fire. Sorry New Zealand Police, we understand that gang does not want to hand over the cup anytime soon.
