I was just thinking about brushfires and fire detection / fire spotting.

Are there any automated fire detection systems that use 360 degree cameras with AI looking for smoke plums, infrared hot spots, and spread out over the tops of mountain ranges ?

I … don’t … know.

There are lookout towers and i assume that they are fitted with cameras these days.

Aircraft can do a good job of spotting fires visually, but i don’t know how accurate and frequent the reports. Satellites also do a good job of spotting fires, but it can be three days between satellite overpasses and a lot can happen in that time.

There may be. This website is more in the realm of advertising than implementation, but still interesting. PS. Apparently, 30% of Australia’s CO2 emissions come from bushfires.

FireWatch System Overview

The FireWatch system operates 24/7, during daylight hours and night time with optical sensor incorporating enhanced spectral sensitivity with near-infrared (NIR) sensing Night Vision capabilities. It has an extensive detection range and has proven to be a cost effective system to implement.

This is a satellite picture of the fires currently burning in northern NSW/southern QLD at the moment.
