Gardeners to face backyard blitz on netting with new laws proposed to protect wildlife

Backyard gardeners could face fines of almost $2,500 if they are not careful when covering their fruit trees with nets.

In an Australian-first, the Victorian Government wants to legislate the colour and size of any netting used to protect household fruit trees and veggie patches.

Me too

It took me catching one beautiful bird
and having to partially* cut it free with scissors
to convince me to remove them from my berry bushes

finally chopped a large-ish hole, then carefully attempt to cut away
what was left of the entangling mesh from the panic-stricken bird’s claws
to convince me that it was better to lose the top layer of the berries ever years
than to traumatize and/or kill wildlife every season.

This is the type the previous owner left for me to use: TEAR RESISTANT Green Nylon

That is pretty old, isn’t it? I remember having some of that (cheap and nasty) many years ago. I seem to remember it being not in very big bits. I used it over the seedlings in the nursery area – domestic, small. Never caught a bird in it. Perhaps I wasn’t using enough of it. ;)

At 5mm max stretched size people will have to use shadecloth not netting.

I thought that too, but I looked up Bunnings for bird netting and the standard white stuff is sold as 5mm.

Oh, and further…the stuff used extensively in the vineyards is most definitely bigger than 5mm. I’m not sure I’ve even seen 5mm stuff around. As you say, Tamb, apart from insect netting, which I use over my Brussels sprouts during the cabbage moth season. And that is very expensive stuff if you were going to net a fruit tree.

What will happen is that people will use a shotgun instead.

I find it much easier to throw some onion bags over the branches I want to keep.

My personal encounter was some 20+ years ago
but the image of I posted was from currant stock on Amazon.com

..and comes in some serious bits…

Deterring birds from seeds & seedlings is somewhat different
than protecting rows of bird-bite sized temptingly ripe berries.

This is how I keep my fruit from birds and bats. However, fruit fly basically requires mosquito netting.
