Thought I’d start this thread on names.

People love to call thier animals a name…some are nice names and some are down right rude….. guess it depends on what the animal is doing to what its called at that moment.

I like to observe the animal before I name it.

My Light Sussex bantams are named after the characters on M*A*S*H. One year my new chooks were named after fruit…hence Peaches & Mango.

Who could forget “Nibbles” my little lop bunny………

Harley the Siamese was named after the only traffic we saw on NYD when we drove home from picking him up…… a Harley Davidson motor bike.

How did your animals get their names????

Somewhere in Brazil I can only hope there is a dog rejoicing in the name of “Bitch”…

Little Miss Naughty, on her return from Rotary exchange in Brazil, assured us that the new puppy’s name should be “Puta” as “this means ‘girl dog’ in Portuguese”…

Dipstick…has a different colour on the very tip of her tail…she’s a bit of a dipstick as well in nature but is the most loving cat I’ve met…but not sooky…

Midnight Raider – because he raided our house in the middle of the night and sat meowing under MrD’s bed (I was away at the time)…eventually nicknamed Shadow because he followed me everywhere…sadly we think a snake has got him, he’s been missing for 10 days now and Puta is moping for her playmate…

We had a cat called Crystal Gravy but the children have no idea why they called him that…often the kids named a pet after a friend, so we have had Sally and Georgina…

Honey – she had strips of honey coloured fur through the grey…Kawaii (Jap for “cute”)…Itazura “doroba”…(Jap for Mischief “robber”)…Indiana Jones (adventurous), brother to Kawaii and Itazura …a guinea fowl called Obelix (and he had a mate Asterix)…then of course the late Henny and Penny…no surprises there…

Fashionasta has a black and white cat called Moo Cat…

I haven’t named the willy wagtails yet but give me time…

Good topic :)

We usually prefer to get to know the animal a little first so that the name fits. Our first two rats were Snifter and Basil. Snifter had this snuffling habit that just led to her name, and Basil was a tip of the hat to Fawlty Towers, even though she was a girl. Basil’s surname was Puddles, because when she was young she would pee on everybody all the time – luckily she grew out of that :)

My third rat was a rescue, like the dog, so she came with a name (Whiskers).

I don’t know if I can even remember all the mouse names – Wizz, Mousie, Speedy, Fix, Cat, Snuffulufugus (sp??), Snuffulufugus 2, Snowy…

With birds we were especially creative – the galah was “Pinky”, the first lorikeet was “Greeny”, followed by “Greenelle” and “Baby Greeny” :D :D To this day if I’m driving around and see some galahs, I cheeruflly call “Pinkies!!” and do a galah noise – for corellas it is “whities” :)

Determined to have an Admiral Fuzzbutt next time we get ratties :)

Wanted to give my doberman pup a german sounding name, could only think of Helga, Hilda and Eva.

No Mrs Hitler thoughts came into it.

I think Eva is a great name for a dog.

We had a bantam hen as a kid and her names was “Honey” as it was her feather colour.

We had a German Shephard that my sister wanted to call “Fritz”… she ended up with two beagles named Merry and Pippin.

In PNG, black dogs were often called “Blackie”, white dogs were often called “Whitey” and Brown dogs were often called “Brownie” but if you ever ran one over then it’s name was “Nambawan Hunting Dog”.

And in PNG a dog that was black and white was called “Snoopy” or “Snoops”.

LOL re Number One Hunting Dog….!

I was thinking, we had a dog called Tiger, his eyes were yellow like a tiger’s…

there was Digger, because he dug…he could also climb trees…sorta…if it had the right lean…

My guide dogs were Smudge (he was cream labrador with a brown smudge over one eye), and Rusty (Rustica to her friends)…red cattle dog with a blue heeler tail…

We had a cat called Yardy because he only had three legs (feet)…Henrietta was a top-knot bantam (sorry I don’t know bantam breeds)…my pony was Beauty but she didn’t look it…lovely nature tho’…lil bro’s pony was Marigold…so help me…skewbald (the browns were rich chestnuts) and her eyes were cornflower blue…

There’s a local racehorse at the moment, his name is Frog: that’s his name in the stud books.

and that’s it from me…

My current pets are a Maltese x named Zoey… the name just kind of ‘fitted’ her, and she also reminded us of the Sesame St character of the same name.
It was a bit weird… some people had bought her and her twin brother while they were little pups, but they didn’t get along with the people’s other dogs, so they gave them back to the breeder. A few months after we bought Zoey, we ran into the breeder and they asked us what we had decided to name her. When we said that we had decided on the name Zoey, the breeder couldn’t believe it as that is the same name that the people that gave her back had called her. So I figure that she was ‘meant’ to have that name. :)
Then, we have two Isa Brown hens… Ruby & Soho, named after the song by Rancid, of course.
I could probably name all of the other pets that we’ve had, and tell you why, but I would be here all night! :)

It’s always nice to see what people call their Bebees…

Our family is:

Mary-Bunny, the black kelpie/lab/Best 10 over the fence..
Joseph, the tenterfield terrier
Fish, the black and white DSH
Missy Moo-Moo, the elderly, recently adopted, Chihuahua.

The order above is opposite to the pecking order at home. No surprises there..

Hi Firestorm,

What’s a DSH? I’m sure it will be obvious but I can’t think what it is.. :)

That reminds me, M-I-L always called her dogs Tuppence or Toby (just changed the name on the doghouse). Until Socks came along…then Dumpit the cat (because she was dumped in front of their house)…but Dumpit eventually became Soxie (strewth) because she would not come to feed unless Socks the dog was called…

Esso was a feral kitten who was born in the shed where I kept my horses. There was a drum of oil stored there and someone broke in and doust her and her brother Tommy. We found spent matches and never saw the mother again so both came home to live.
Busy because he was a busy kitten.
Ginger Megs was a ginger tabby so was named after the comic.
Miss Kitty was a cat in a Little Golden Book that my sons had.

I just remembered – if we include the local wildlife, I can add Cookie, Big Boss, and Pegleg.

These were all magpies – Big Boss was just the adult male of the group so we had a few of those over the years. Think we had a couple of Cookies too. Only one Pegleg, he had a wobbly leg.
