This preference usually dictates which threads I will click on here, with astronomy threads typically being ignored. People who know me can’t understand why I don’t bother looking up at the stars at night when we go camping, but I’m just not that interested. I think it may be because I find it has little impact on my world, but I really don’t know how this apathy began. I’ve always loved animals, however, and in recent years have taken more of an interest in plants, so ecology is right up there at number 1.

What is your preference, and if you care to share, why do you think your numbers 1 and 7 are placed where they are?

Re-reading that, it does sound as thought I should place biology at number one. To clarify, of all things I am passionate about, biodiversity and ridding ecosystems of feral animals and plants is at the top. Ecology it is.

You can fit just about everything into Biology that deals with nature, even your number 1 Ecology. However with such a huge area of interest and scientific endeavor, to state exclusively that Biology is a topic of interest serves little purpose, and understanding would be much better served by using some of the main branches of which there are many with botany, zoology and microbiology being the main ones. Evolutionary biology and Paleontology are also of strong interest to the forum and likewise are branches of Biology.

Thanks PF. The thing is that it’s just a list. I did not state that it was the list. It was posted as I was genuinely interested in whether, as I suspect, most posters here are interested in the branches of science I am least interested in. I’m sorry if the list I chose, which was the shortest, simplest list I could find at the time, does not meet the criteria you think it should.

It would be easier to understand and for people to respond if they had a better idea of what was included under the Biology label. People don’t buy things they don’t understand, so make it simple, etc.

Well, for me, you can just about reverse that order.

Not for me. So long as the thread is about science i’m interested. My goal, seldom achieved, is to respond to every thread with a single definitive reply. Big talk.

What I avoid is sport, politics and small talk.

I like the hard sciences, those where I can go back to fundamentals and compute the answer. I like sciences where 7 standard deviations is considered the gold standard and 0.3% probability of error suffices.

Soft sciences which treat 5% probability of error as a negligible error are an anathema to me, that is nowhere near low enough to make a press announcement. It’s like living in a world where in any year, 5% of buildings are expected to collapse.

I love astronomy. Interesting, beautiful, and humbling. Sometimes things don’t seem so bad when you look at the Milky Way and realise your problems are insignificant.

I also like certain aspects of psychology, like why serial killers and mass murderers kill.

And I think anatomy and physiology are interesting too.

every-day-physics though tops the list, dumb as I can get it, gravity keeps my feet on the ground
