Evolution of learning is key to better artificial intelligence

Since “2001: A Space Odyssey,” people have wondered: could machines like HAL 9000 eventually exist that can process information with human-like intelligence?

Researchers at Michigan State University say that true, human-level intelligence remains a long way off, but their new paper published in The American Naturalist explores how computers could begin to evolve learning in the same way as natural organisms did—with implications for many fields, including artificial intelligence.

what does a human child do, surely there’s some hint of the phylogeny expressed in the ontogeny

strikes me fleshy things feel discomfort, variously, how would you replicate that in machine intelligence (ignoring fleshy things are machines too, but call them a different sort)

what sort of teacher is aversion to discomfort

it’s an interesting Q I reckon, as man gravitates toward machine intelligence. Man might create entire new organisms, which humans do by the way, variously replication endeavors, their own kind or food they grow for example. Not new types of organisms you might argue, incorrectly in my opinion, we’ve all seen buffy’s dog.

anyway machine intelligence is here, now. And you could argue it has been going way back (if you include organic replicators)

I ask what is artificial intelligence really

yeah could read all that, refine my ideas based on what is agreed, just seems wanky to me, a wanky word

there may be some new intelligence, to be had, the impression I get is artificial really more means new

fact is though there are new intelligences every day, those leaning machines we call children

You left out “so does”.

But yes, it seems people are so focussed on artificial intelligence that they forget about the advantages of having a natural intelligence communicating with it.

Artificial intelligence is everywhere and it’s already making a huge impact on our lives. It’s autocompleting texts on our cellphones, telling us which videos to watch on YouTube, beating us at video games, recognizing us in photos, ordering products in stores, driving cars, scheduling appointments, you get the idea. Today we’re going to explain what AI can (and can’t) do right now and explain how we got to where we are today.

Crash Course is produced in association with PBS Digital studios.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

A topic studied by people with no natural intelligence.

That’s why i feel that even i can do better than most experts in that field of AI called “machine vision”.

braggart, moll :-)

I like the term machine intelligence, if they start using real neurons i’d still be happy with machine intelligence

artificial and synth/etics may sound interesting to some people, not to me
